MADISON, Wis. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team held a 1-0 lead into the second half thanks to a Judy Coffman (San Jose, Calif./Santa Theresa) score from Melissa Dobbyn (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson) but allowed Wisconsin the tying marker in the 76th minute as the Wolverines played the Badgers to a 1-1 draw Friday night (Oct. 6) at the McClimon Track/Soccer Complex. The contest featured 42 fouls, and Megan Tuura (Tucker, Ga./St. Pius X Catholic) made four saves in the stalemate.
Michigan jumped on the Badgers early as the familiar combination of Coffman and Dobbyn teamed up for the first score of the night, giving U-M a 1-0 lead at 15:18. Dobbyn fed Coffman at the top of the 18-yard box, and Coffman one-timed the pass home.
Tuura made two saves in the first frame, including one in the final seconds, to help the Maize and Blue carry a one-goal lead into halftime.
Michigan opened the second with a rush of offense as Dobbyn led the attack, creating two shots that both went wide. Tuura then came up big in the 58th minute as she turned away a strong Wisconsin chance. Michigan used the momentum from the save to go on the counterattack, and Dobbyn forced Wisconsin goalkeeper Lynn Murray to make her first stop of the evening.
U-M continued to pressure offensively, generating a scoring opportunity in the 64th minute. Sarah Banco (Medfield, Mass./Noble and Greenough School) leaped for a cross and sent a header high that Murray punched over the net. Michigan's corner attempt was defended away.
After the Wolverines had two more chances in the offensive end, Wisconsin came down and tied the score 1-1 at 71:54 on a goal from Allison Preiss following a Michigan foul.
The Wolverines' best opportunity to take the lead in regulation play came in the 85th minute on a shot by Dobbyn that was turned away. Minutes later, Michigan defended a Wisconsin corner kick and the two teams went into extra time.
Tuura kept Michigan in the game as she made a save four minutes into the first overtime. Dobbyn then earned a shot in the 98th minute, but her attempt was blocked away. U-M secured a corner chance in the 108th minute just after defending a Wisconsin set piece. The Coffman service went to Dobbyn, who ripped a shot into the Badgers defense. The ball rolled over the end line, earning Michigan another corner attempt, but the Wolverines could not capitalize.
The final scoring opportunity came on a Wisconsin restart kick. The Badgers shot sailed high and the game ended in a 1-1 draw. The Wolverines were a player down in overtime due to a red card received by Amy Klippert (Newport Beach, Calif./Newport Harbor) in the final minute of regulation.
Michigan returns to the field on Sunday (Oct. 8) to take on Northwestern at 1 p.m. CDT at the Leonard B. Thomas Athletic Complex in Evanston, Ill.
