Michigan Finishes in Second Place at Puerto Rico Meet

TRUJILLO ALTA, Puerto Rico -- The University of Michigan women's swimming and diving team finished second out of nine teams at Copa Coqui 2006 yesterday (Tuesday, Jan. 3). Michigan took the top spot in each event in which it competed. The Wolverines did not swim in the final three events.
Lindsey Smith (Dexter, Mich./Dexter) led the way for Michigan, taking first in two events. She swam Copa Coqui record times in the 200-meter freestyle (2:09.01) and 100-meter freestyle (59.41).
Kaitlyn Brady (Wilmington, Del./Mount Pleasant) clocked in first in the 100-meter backstroke (1:07.78). Brady also swam the second leg for the Wolverines' 200-meter freestyle relay team -- which included Courtney Beyer (Los Altos Hills, Calif./Los Altos), Clinique Brundidge (Southfield, Mich./Southfield-Lathrup) and Emily Brunemann (Crescent Springs, Ky./Notre Dame Academy) -- that set a Copa Coqui record (1:49.15).
Michigan then went 1-2-3 in the 100-meter butterfly with Payton Johnson (Champaign, Ill./Centennial) taking first with the top time (1:05.51). Justine Mueller (Monroe, Mich./Monroe) finished off the individual events for Michigan with a top time in the 100-meter breaststroke (1:15.30), setting set a Copa Coqui record.
Susan Gilliam (Los Angeles, Calif./Bolles) and Wendy Shieh (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron) each had runner-up times. Gilliam took second in the 200-meter freestyle (2:10.72), while Shieh grabbed second in the 100-meter butterfly (1:06.10).
Samantha Montroy (Trenton, Mich./Trenton) made her season debut, finishing 40th in the 100-meter freestyle (1:07.24).
The Wolverines returns to action Jan. 13-14 when they host the Michigan Invitational at Canham Natatorium.
