This Week's Lineup -- vs. Miami (Ohio)/Old Dominion, at Central Michigan
The University of Michigan field hockey team (1-3, 0-0 Big Ten) comes home to the Wolverine state for a trio of non-conference games over the next week, kicking off the home portion of its 2005 schedule against Miami (Ohio) and Old Dominion at Phyllis Ocker Field before traveling north for a mid-week contest against intrastate rival Central Michigan. U-M will play the RedHawks at 2 p.m. on Friday (Sept. 2) and return the following morning for a 10 a.m. match against the Monarchs. The Wolverines will wrap up a busy week of competition on Tuesday (Sept. 13), suiting up against the Chippewas at 4 p.m. in Mount Pleasant, Mich.
Scouting the RedHawks
Michigan has dominated the all-time series against Miami (Ohio) with a 8-1-1 record against the RedHawks. In the last meeting between the two programs -- on Sept. 19, 2000 -- April Fronzoni and Jessica Rose combined for seven goals en route to a 10-1 drubbing against the visiting RedHawks. Miami owns a 1-2 mark after its season-opening trip out west last week. The RedHawks kicked off the season with a 2-1 overtime win against Stanford but suffered defeats in their two most recent outings -- 0-2 against Pacific (Aug. 28) and 0-5 at California (Aug. 30). Scouting the Monarchs
The Wolverines will sqaure off against Old Dominion for the fifth consecutive year and trail in the all-time series by a 2-4 margin. The Monarchs overcame a two-goal deficit in last season's meeting to defeat host Michigan 3-2 in overtime. After a scoreless first half, goals by junior/sophomore Katie Morris (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer HS) and senior Jessica Blake put the Wolverines gave U-M the initial advantage, but Old Dominion scored twice in the final 12 minutes of regulation before netting the gamewinner at the 82:32 mark. The Monarchs are 2-2 this season after back-to-back home weekends. In their most recent appearance on the pitch, they lost a 2-1 overtime decision against Maryland. Scouting the Chippewas
The Wolverines hold the 24-14-2 advantage in the all-time series against Central Michigan and have won 15 straight, dating back to the 1990 campaign. U-M dominated last season's meeting between the two programs, producing its greatest scoring output of the 2004 campaign with an 11-0 home victory. Senior Jessica Blake led the Wolverine attack with a career-high four goals while senior Adrienne Hortillosa and freshman Lucia Belassi (Paysandu, Uruguay/Liceo #1) also added multi-point efforts with two goals and an assist each. CMU owns a 1-1 mark heading into the weekend after opening the season with a 3-2 loss at St. Louis before rebounding with a 5-2 win over New Hampshire the following day (Sept. 3). Welcome Home!
After opening this season with a quartet of road games, Michigan returns to the friendly confines of Ann Arbor and Phyllis Ocker Field. The Wolverines own an impressive 45-6 record at their home facility since 2000, including a perfect 10-0 mark during the 2002 campaign and a pair of 12-game winning streaks. Last season, the Wolverines completed the home portion of their schedule with a 8-2 mark in Ann Arbor, outscoring its opponents 34-11 at Ocker Field.
Fresh Faces, Big Goals
Freshmen Stephanie Hoyer (Englewood, Colo./Cherry Creek HS) and Erin Dallas (Marlowe, N.H./Keene HS) each scored her first collegiate goal in Michigan's 3-2 win over Temple (Sept. 4), leading U-M to its first win of the season. Both newcomers also nothced their first multi-point efforts as Hoyer earned a pair of goals (2-0-4) and Dallas recorded a goal and an assist (1-1-3).
Standing on Her Head
With 32 stops through the first four contests of the 2005 season, junior goalkeeper Beth Riley (Palmyra, Pa./Palmyra Area HS) shares the Big Ten lead (with Northwestern's Sherri-Anne Nyberg) for most saves. Riley ranks second in the conference with 8.00 saves per game.
Free Hits
Michigan fell to 1-4 in the all-time series against Maryland. The Wolverines' lone victory against the Terps came in the 2001 NCAA Championship game (2-0).
U-M improved to 3-1 all-time against Temple.
Through the first four games of the season, freshman Stephanie Hoyer leads the Wolverines in goals (2) and points (4).
On the Horizon
The Wolverines will host a one-game homestand next weekend, squaring off against the Vermont Catamounts on Sunday (Sept. 18) at Phyllis Ocker Field. The non-conference competition -- the first ever between the two programs -- is slated for a 1 p.m. start.
