ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- After its record-setting weekend performance at the 2005 Wolverine Intercolleigate, the University of Michigan men's golf team was named men's college team of the week by Golfweek.
The host Wolverines used their home course, the U-M Golf Course, to their advantage as they recorded the school's first-ever team round below 280 with a seven-under 277 in the first round, only to better it with a school record nine-under 275 in the second round, building a 12-stroke lead in the process. The Wolverines closed out their first win in over four years posting a three-over 287 to finish with a U-M record 839 54-hole total.
Senior Christian Vozza (Traverse City, Mich./Grand Rapids Baptist HS) used three straight rounds in the 60s to win his first collegiate event. He finished with a one-shot victory with a career-best and new U-M record 205 total after a four-under 67, and back-to-back 69s.
Vozza is the first Wolverine to win a tournament in four years. The last time a Wolverine has won medalist honors in a tournament was the 2001 Wolverine South Invitational (March 3-4), when Andrew Chapman secured his first win of his collegiate career with a rain-shortened 141 (72-69) 36-hole total.
The Wolverines will hit the road for their third fall tournament of the season when they head to Cordova, Tenn., Monday and Tuesday (Oct. 3-4) for the 2005 Memphis Intercollegiate at the Colonial Country Club. The two-day tournament will be 54 holes, with 36 on Monday and a final 18 on Tuesday.
