ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team defeated Western Michigan 5-3 on Friday (Sept. 16) at U-M Soccer Field. Senior Therese Heaton (Wheaton, Ill./Warrenville South) netted her first career hat trick, scoring just 2:15 in and adding a pair of second-half goals, including the game-winner, to lead the Wolverine offense. Junior Judy Coffman (San Jose, Calif./Santa Theresa) added a first-half goal and freshman Danelle Underwood (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Northern) tallied her second career goal. Junior Megan Tuura (Tucker, Ga./St. Pius X Catholic) remained undefeated (3-0-1), picking up her third win of the season.
Heaton started the scoring early with a goal at 2:15. Heaton took possession of free ball behind the Broncos' defense and scooted a shot low into the net.
Western Michigan tied the game at 14:27 on a goal that resulted from a free kick. Midfielder Katie Ruzinsky flicked a shot directly off the free kick past Tuura to tie the game at 1-1. Coffman put Michigan up 2-1 less than two minutes later at 16:12 as she dribbled past a Broncos defender and fired a shot past Western Michigan goalkeeper Kate Perz.
Western Michigan tied the game with less than five minutes left in the first half. Forward Thalia Playford gathered a ball off a Michigan turnover and slid a shot past Tuura. Michigan found itself in a 2-2 tie as the first half ended despite carrying play for the majority of the half.
The Wolverines came out strong in the second half, scoring just over five minutes into the second half at 50:06. In a shot that appeared to have been saved by Broncos goalie Perz, Underwood was rewarded with the goal. Sophomore Jamie Artsis (Chatsworth, Calif./Harvard-Westlake School) ripped a shot off a free kick by senior Stephanie Boyles (Arvada, Colo./Pomona), but the shot bounced off Perz and Underwood followed up with the goal that barely crossed the line.
Heaton extended the Wolverine lead to two with her goal at 74:10. Sophomore Melissa Dobbyn (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson) crossed a ball from the left side and Heaton volleyed a shot to the low left corner of the net to move the score to 4-2. Heaton completed the hat trick four minutes later at 78:45 off a through ball from sophomore Sarah Banco (Medfield, Mass./Noble and Greenough School). Heaton passed the ball to Banco and raced through the Broncos defense as Banco completed the give-and-go to Heaton, who placed a shot into the low left corner of the net.
Western Michigan tallied its third goal of the game with less than two minutes to play as forward Mandi Marsh caught up to a long ball and put her shot past Tuura to make the score 5-3.
The Wolverines head to South Bend, Ind., on Sunday (Sept. 18) to face No. 5-ranked Notre Dame at Alumni Field. Game time is 1 p.m. EST/CDT.

NOTES
• Senior Therese Heaton tallied her first career hat trick, including the game-winner at 74:10. Her previous career high in goals was two, which she has accomplished three times in her career. She scored two against Boston University last season in 2004 (Sept. 12), against the University of Florida in 2002 (Aug. 31), and against Miami (Ohio) in 2002 NCAA Tournament (Nov. 17).
• Heaton moved into sole possession of fifth place all-time in game-winning goals in the Michigan record book with nine. She needs just one to move into a tie for second place with Kacy Beitel (1997-2000), Abby Crumpton (1999-2002) and Stephanie Chavez (2000-03), who each scored 10 career game-winners.
• Heaton's three-goal outburst moved her into sixth place all-time in points in the U-M women's soccer record book with 64. She is just five points shy of Ruth Poulin's (1994-97) 69 career points (30 g, 9 a). She needs just five more goals to move into a tie with Poulin for fifth place in all-time goals. Heaton is the team leader in points with 12.
• Heaton's hat trick is just the eighth in the history of women's soccer at Michigan. Her six points match the third most in a game all-time and she is only the eighth player in Michigan history to register a six-point game. Jamie Artsis is the last Michigan player to record a six-point game. Artsis notched a hat trick against Iowa on Sept. 26, 2004.
• Junior Judy Coffman scored her third career goal and her second in three games. Coffman's two goals this season are a season high for goals in her career. The goal gives her 10 career points.
• Junior Lauren Fifield played in her second career game and her first game since Sept. 12, 2004, when she saw action against Boston University.
• Sophomore Melissa Dobbyn registered her second assist of the season in the second half. She is tied with Heaton for the team lead in assists with two. She has eight points on the season (3 g, 2 a).
• Sophomore Jamie Artsis earned her second assist of the season. Her two assists this season are a season high for assists in her career. She also recorded a career-high in shots with six.
• Sophomore Sarah Banco picked up her first career point with an assist on Therese Heaton's third goal in the second half.
• Freshman Danelle Underwood netted her second career goal. She has scored two goals and added one assist (five points) for the Wolverines this season.
• Freshmen Sheera Goren and Kristin Thomas each saw their first game action of the season as reserves.
• The Wolverines' five goals are the most goals scored in a game since Michigan's five-goal effort in a 5-1 win over Eastern Michigan in 2002 (Sept. 8). The school record for goals in a game is nine, which occurred on Oct. 17, 1997, in a 9-1 win over Illinois in Ann Arbor.
QUOTES
Michigan Head Coach Debbie Rademacher
On tonight's game ... "We had to come out with a must-win going into Notre Dame in terms of confidence and getting some momentum back. We definitely felt disappointed going into the first half. We felt like we gave up two against the momentum, bad goals. Then we took charge and felt like we played well in the second half."
On entering the second half tied 2-2 ... "We talked about letting in two goals that bounced through our box when that is something we have been practicing. Those are not the type of goals we can let up against any team. We can't score and have the momentum and then let them back in and then do it again and let them back in again. We need to hold on. So that was sort of the focus that we need to get back on track and play better."
On the play of senior forward Therese Heaton ... "She just works really hard to get her goals in the right place at the right time. It's not because she is lucky, it's because she works hard to get there. She has been key for us."
On using 19 players in the game ... "We haven't used a lot of numbers in a couple of games, and going into the Big Ten season, a two-game weekend is a lot of soccer. We need to be able to get some players some experience so they can help us out."
U-M Senior Forward Therese Heaton
On scoring her first career hat trick ... "It's pretty exciting. It's definitely something cool to have on my career. It's neat to have that."
On her role as a senior forward ... "I am in a leadership role, not being just a captain but being a senior, the four of us now with one down. It's still all of us that need to lead the team and that is what I'm trying to do -- just play with all of my heart and get goals because that is my job as a forward. All of the seniors and upperclassmen are helping lead this team in the direction that we want to go."
On scoring a team-high five goals this season ... "I'm just trying to find myself in the right place at the right time and working hard. It's nice that the three of us up top have had a year of playing together and that helps just being able to read each other and understand what each other's tendencies are. I think that is really key this year and that is why we have found a lot of success up top."
