ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan football senior Kevin Dudley (Brookville, Ind./Franklin County HS) and senior women's tennis team captain Michelle DaCosta (Huber Heights, Ohio/Wayne HS) have been named U-M's male and female Big Ten Conference Outstanding Sportsmanship Award winners for 2004-05.
Dudley and DaCosta were singled out from the list of 25 Wolverines -- one in each varsity sport -- recognized for sportsmanship during the course of the 2004-05 athletic year. The honor acknowledges those student-athletes who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. In addition, they must be in good academic standing and must have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting.
A two-year starter at fullback, Dudley received U-M's Robert P. Ufer Bequest presented to the senior football player who demonstrates the most enthusiasm and love for Michigan. He paved the way for three consecutive 1,000-yard rushers (Chris Perry in 2002-03 and Mike Hart in 2004) and played on two Big Ten championship teams. Dudley is a sports management and communications major.
A four-time All-Big Ten selection, DaCosta was a two-time Big Ten Tennis Athlete of the Week in 2005. She finished her collegiate career with a No. 76 singles national ITA ranking and was sixth regionally. In doubles action, she listed No. 19 nationally and No. 3 regionally. Her career singles record at U-M was 74-63, while she posted an 81-56 career doubles mark. DaCosta is a biopsychology and cognitive science major.
Beginning in 2003, the conference office instituted the Big Ten Sportsmanship Awards. One member of each varsity sports team on every campus is nominated by the institution, two of whom are named as the Outstanding Sportsmanship Award winners from each school annually.
