U-M Drops Non-Conference Road Contest to San Diego

SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- The No. 41 University of Michigan men's tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision to No. 53 San Diego Saturday afternoon (March 5) at the USD West Courts. The Wolverines' (7-3, 2-0 Big Ten) four-match winning streak came to an end after the Toreros (3-3) claimed victories on seven on the nine courts.
The match was postponed a day due to rain, and due to the chance of inclement weather Saturday the match began with the singles competition instead of doubles. San Diego quickly jumped out to a 2-0 lead after straight-set victories at Nos. 5 and 4. Sophomore Brian Hung (Hong Kong, China/Sagemont Virtual School), who experienced flu-like symptoms earlier in the week, narrowed the gap to 2-1 by cruising past Mirza Koristovic 6-2, 6-3 at No. 3.
Back-to-back USD singles victories, including eighth-ranked Pierrick Ysern's 6-3, 6-4 win over senior Michael Rubin (Canton, Ohio/Canton Central Catholic HS) at No. 1, sealed the team victory for the Toreros.
Senior David Anving (Tvaaker, Sweden/Varbergs Gymnasieskola), who was also battling through illness, gave U-M momentum heading into doubles by defeating Oscar Plotnik 6-2, 4-6 1-0(5) at No. 6. With the victory, Anving improves to 7-3 on the dual match season.
With the outcome already decided, Michigan seized early leads in its doubles matches at Nos. 2 and 3, but San Diego eventually fought back and won all three matches to earn its fifth and final point of the afternoon.
The Wolverines will face Rice in a neutral-site meeting Monday (March 7, 9 a.m. PST) at the Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego, Calif. The match was originally scheduled for Sunday (March 6) at 1:30 p.m. PST.
