ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 43 University of Michigan men's tennis team remained unbeaten at Varsity Tennis Center for the eighth straight match, handing Indiana State a 5-2 loss in the second half of a day/night doubleheader Saturday evening (March 12). The Wolverines (9-4, 2-0 Big Ten), who defeated Butler 7-0 earlier in the day, swept the doubles matches and earned victories on four of six singles courts to knock off the Sycamores (4-5) for the third straight season.
The Wolverines found themselves with a 1-0 lead heading into singles after earning a doubles sweep against their second straight opponent. Senior Josef Fischer (Nuernberg, Germany/Bradenton Academy) and sophomore Ryan Heller (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North HS) continued to find their rhythm as a pair, easily defeating Christopher Eldon and Anton Tsymbalov 8-2 to improve to 5-1 at the No. 2 position. Sophomore Brian Hung (Hong Kong, China/Sagemont Virtual School) and freshman Matko Maravic (Zagreb, Croatia/V. Gimnazija) clinched the doubles point by upsetting ISU's 43rd-ranked duo of Aaron Phillips and Simon Thornewill 8-3 at No. 1.
Senior Vinny Gossain (Okemos, Mich./Okemos HS) and sophomore Steve Peretz (Brooklyn, N.Y./The Dwight School) completed the sweep with a win at No. 3, defeating Kevin Doh and Will Moseley 8-4 for their fifth victory in eight matches in 2005. Michigan has swept the doubles point against five of its opponents this season.
Heller, who sat out the morning singles competition to rest an aching shoulder, was the first person off the court against the Sycamores after posting a 6-1, 6-3 win over Eldon at No. 4 to give U-M a 2-0 lead in the match. Senior Michael Rubin (Canton, Ohio/Canton Central Catholic HS) continued his stellar dual match play with a 6-2, 6-3 decision over Rishi Behl at No. 2 to bring the Wovlerines within one match of claiming the team victory. Rubin and Maravic are tied with a team-best 9-4 singles record in dual match action.
Peretz provided the clincher at No. 5, as he battled his way to a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Phillips to give Michigan a 4-0 advantage. Maravic remained perfect at No. 1 after outlasting Tsymbalov 6-4, 5-7, 1-0(7) to give the Wolverines their final point of the evening. Peretz and Maravic both hold a team-best overall singles record of 14-8 in 2004-05.
The Wolverines return to action next Sunday (March 20) when they travel to Baton Rouge, La., to face Louisiana State. The match is scheduled for a noon start at the WT "Dub" Robinson Tennis Stadum.
