LA JOLLA, Calif. -- The No. 12-ranked University of Michigan women's water polo team split its first two games of the Triton Invitational Saturday (Feb. 5), falling to No. 13 UC Davis 4-3 in the opening round before rebounding with a 9-6 victory over Cal State-Bakersfield in the nightcap. Shana Welch (Larksville, Pa./Wyoming Valley West HS) led Michigan with five goals over the two games, and Megan Hausmann (San Diego, Calif./Bishop's HS) added three goals, three steals and four drawn ejections. Defensively, Betsey Armstrong (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron HS) made seven saves against the Aggies while Sally Stone (San Diego, Calif./Bishop's HS) stopped five shots against Cal State Bakersfield.
In the opening match of the tournament against UC Davis, the Wolverines seized a 1-0 lead with a goal by Meg Knudtsen (Los Altos, Calif./St. Francis HS) at 2:42 but gave up two straight goals to the Aggies to fall behind 2-1 after one period of play.
Following the UCD goal, the Michigan defense took control of the game, not allowing a goal over the next 14:53 of play. Welch answered for Michigan with the lone goal of the second stanza, scoring at 5:45 to knot the score at 2-2 at halftime.
Neither team was able to gain an advantage early in the second half, but Hausmann finally broke the tie with a power-play goal at 3:03 that gave Michigan a 3-2 lead. UC Davis broke its scoreless streak by scoring back-to-back goals at 0:30 of the third quarter and 3:07 of the final period to take a 4-3 lead. The Wolverines were able to gain possession multiple times in the last minute of play but were unable to score with the equalizer.
In the second round, Michigan took a quick 1-0 lead over the Roadrunners with a goal by Erin Brown (San Diego, Calif./Bishop's HS) on the Wolverines' first possession of the game. After Cal State-Bakersfield won the opening sprint, Michigan came up with the defensive stop and found Brown on the counterattack for the score. CSUB, however, reeled off the next three goals of the game to take a 3-1 lead at the end of the first quarter.
The Wolverines responded by scoring seven out of the next eight goals in the game to take an 8-4 lead early in the fourth quarter. The run was highlighted by three goals by Welch and a pair by Hausmann. CSUB scored two more goals before the final horn, but Welch's fourth marker in the game with 2:17 to play sealed the victory for the Wolverines.
Michigan will wrap up the Triton Invitataional on Sunday (Feb. 6) with a match against either No. 16 Arizona State or No. 18 UC Irvine at 12:25 p.m. PST and a match against either No. 15 Hartwick or Cal Baptist at 4:45 p.m. PST.

Q U O T E S
Michigan Head Coach Matt Anderson
On the first game ... "Our defense needed work after last weekend. I think now the defense has turned the corner and we are back to where we should be. San Diego last night and Davis today, we only allowed only four goals each. Our offense is now unproductive. As well as our defense is playing, that is how much we need to work on our offense. That is what killed us in this game. The defensive effort was there. The offensive effort was not."
On the game against Cal State-Bakersfield ... "We got everyone a lot of playing time and were able to use some different lineups to try and generate more shots and it worked. We played a lot better once we realized after the first quarter that we had to take the ball and put it in the back of the net. After that, we controlled the game for the last three quarters."
On the games tomorrow ... "Tomorrow we have two extremely important games against two very good teams. Hartwick just brought in three new international players whose season has just ended so they are in shape and ready to go. Whenever Michigan and Hartwick face each other, it is always a close, hard-fought game. Then we will probably face Arizona State who is a very good team that may be looking for a little revenge from the times we beat them last season. Both games will be a real test for us."
