Wolverines Start Spring Break Trip With Loss to Lions

LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- The No. 11 University of Michigan women's water polo team suffered an 11-2 defeat on Thursday (Feb. 24) against No. 5 Loyola Marymount. The Wolverines struggled to find offense throughout the game and were held scoreless through the final three periods of the game. Megan Hausmann (San Diego, Calif./Bishop's HS) and Shana Welch (Larksville, Pa./Wyoming Valley West HS) scored the lone goals for U-M and Betsey Armstrong (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron HS) made eight saves in three quarters of play.
LMU came out strong in the opening quarter, scoring the first three goals of the game to take a 3-0 lead at 3:50. Michigan answered on its next possession with power play goal from Welch that drew the Wolverines to within two at 3:21. Welch received a pass from Sheetal Narsai (Commerce, Calif./Bell Garden's HS) and sent a shot over LMU goalkeeper Rachel Riddell for the goal.
Loyola responded with a goal by Christine Robinson but again, Michigan cut the lead on its ensuing possession. Megan Hausmann answered for Michigan with a skip shot from seven meters to make the score 4-2 at 2:37. LMU, however, was able to reestablish its three-goal lead with a marker with just under two minutes to play in the quarter to take a 5-2 lead into the second quarter.
The second quarter belonged to LMU as the Lions outscored Michigan 2-0 in the stanza. Loyola took a 6-2 advantage with a goal at 4:12 and then pushed its lead to five goals with a score with just over one minute to play before the half. At the intermission, the Loyola held a 7-2 advantage.
The Lions continued to control the play, scoring on their first three possessions of second half to open up a 10-2 lead with 4:32 to play in the third quarter. LMU tacked one more goal in the final minute of the third quarter to take an 11-2 lead into the final period.
Neither team was able to score in the fourth quarter, giving Loyola Marymount the victory.
Michigan will return to the pool on Friday, Feb. 25 in the opening round of the Gaucho Invitational with a match against Redlands at 2 p.m. PST. The match will be played in Santa Barbara, Calif., at UC Santa Barbara's Campus Pool.
