N O T E S
With its victory, Nebraska narrowed the Wolverines' advantage in the all-time series to 3-2. Michigan owns a 15-29-1 all-time record against Big 12 Conference teams, including 3-4-1 during head coach Joe McFarland's tenure.
Tonight's loss marked Michigan's first loss at home in 12 matches, dating back to the 2003-04 season when U-M suffered an 18-12 defeat against Lehigh in its season-opening tri-meet.
Fifth-year senior captain Ryan Churella has won 20 consecutive dual-meet competitions. His last loss came in last season's opener against Lehigh's top-ranked Troy Letters.
Q U O T E S
Michigan Head Coach Joe McFarland
On tonight's dual meet ... "We're not at full strength. I was a little concerned going into it, but I still thought that if we wrestled well, we could pull this out. We still need to go out and execute, and we just didn't do what we needed to do to get the job done. We didn't get enough bonus points at some of those matches where we needed to, and we gave too many of those up. That ended up being the difference in the match. You have to give Nebraska a lot of credit. They came in here ready to go, and they wrestled with a lot of intensity."
On rebounding from the loss ... "We've got to put this one behind us, because we have a tough match against Central Michigan. We can't dwell on this too long or we're going to find ourselves in trouble on Sunday. We need to regroup and get ready for Central."
U-M Fifth-Year Senior Captain Ryan Churella
On the dual meet ... "I think, for most part, we lost the match, obviously, because we didn't get the bonus points we needed. Their guys are hard to wrestle; they're flexible. They went out there and did what they needed to to win, which may not have been the prettiest thing, but it worked for them. We get a couple points in certain situations in a few matches, and we would have come out on top. Missing two starters is definitely a big thing; we get one of those wins, and we win the match. I guess it's a bit of a reality check. It puts us in place after coming off a big win in Vegas. We just need to get in the room and keep doing the stuff we've been doing. It's still early in the season, and everyone knows that what really counts is the end of the year. We need to focus on the positives and take whatever we can from it."
U-M Sophomore/Freshman Tyrel Todd
On his match ... "I'm frustrated with how my match went. I lost the first two takedowns; my head just wasn't in it, I guess. I came back hard on the kid, wore him out and got the takedowns I needed to win the match."
On rebounding from this loss ... "It's always terrible to lose. With all of our guys, we should have beaten them. We really have to come back strong and beat Central Michigan, go up there and wrestle tough against them. They're a really talented team this year. We just need to get ready for that dual and get a good day of rest in tomorrow."
