ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The Maize team won for the second straight year at the University of Michigan's coed Maize and Blue Intrasquad track and field meet on Friday and Saturday (Dec. 2-3). The final score was 457-419, though in women's events the Blue team held a 169-156 edge. By taking first place in four events -- 400-meter dash, 3,000-meter run, shot put and weight throw -- the women's Maize squad contributed to the repeat victory for the Maize coed team as the Wolverines previewed the 2006 season at the U-M Indoor Track Building.
The Maize team was led by junior/sophomore thrower Bridgette Maynard (Madison, Mich./Bishop Foley), who won both the shot put and the weight throw. Maynard posted a distance of 43-7 3/4 in the shot put, and she posted 52-10 3/4 in the weight throw to surpass her personal best by 1-3 1/2.
The other two Maize first-place finishes came from senior Shavonne Maclin (University Heights, Ohio/Beaumont School), who took her first place finish in the 400-meter dash with a time of 58.10. Maclin finished ahead of Blue squad member junior Chanelle Campbell (Round Rock, Texas/Round Rock) as Campbell posted a time of 58.22. Sophomore Nicole Edwards (Winnipeg, Manitoba/Vincent Massey HS) earned her 10 points in the 3,000-meter run as she posted a time of 9:39.06, which was two seconds ahead of second-place Maize teammate senior/junior Rebecca Walter (Beverly Hills, Mich./Groves).
Freshman Tiffany Ofili (Ypsilanti, Mich./Ypsilanti) made her debut running for the Blue team and broke the meet record in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.67 as she took three of seven first places for the Blue squad. Ofili surpassed Robin Landfair's record, which had been standing since 2003, by just .04 seconds. Ofili also took first place in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.70 and first place in the long jump (18-5).
The Blue team also had two more members etch their name in the record books as senior/junior Kelly Catino (Traverse City, Mich./Traverse City Central) and senior/junior Kristin Pearson (Escanaba, Mich./Escanaba) each posted 11-0 1/4 in the pole vault to match the meet record set in 2003 by senior Elizabeth Boyle (Northbrook, Ill./New Trier HS), Anna Fisher and Lynn Gasparella.
The Wolverines men's and women's track and field teams will open the 2006 season by hosting the Jack Harvey Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 7, at the U-M Indoor Track Building.
