ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Freshman Tiffany Ofili (Ypsilanti, Mich./Ypsilanti) made an impressive collegiate debut, capturing a pair of individual titles to pace the University of Michigan women's track and field team at the season-opening Jack Harvey Invitational on Saturday (Jan. 7) at the U-M Indoor Track Building. The Wolverines put on a dominant performance with six individual crowns and a victory in the 4x400-meter relay.
Ofili proved her superiority throughout the afternoon, posting the fastest time in every individual race in which she competed, preliminary or final. She earned her first collegiate victory with a solid performance in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.67. Only minutes later, she ran away from the seven-person field in the 60-meter dash, posting a time of 7.72 to beat runner-up Pamela Bullock of Findlay to the line by 0.19 seconds.
Freshman Geena Gall (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc HS) also was victorious in her first collegiate meet, winning the 600-meter run with a time of 1:34.32, a little more than three seconds quicker than her teammate, sophomore/freshman Linda Montgomery (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson HS). It was a personal-best performance for Montgomery, who clocked 1:37.43 to shave 1.03 seconds from her previous mark.
Senior/junior Katie Erdman (Cadillac, Mich./Cadillac HS) led a U-M sweep of the top four spots in the 800-meter run to claim her sixth career win in front of the home crowd at the U-M Indoor Track Building. Erdman clocked a time of 2:11.49 and finished about a second and a half ahead of junior/sophomore teammate Laura Glynn (Farmington Hills, Mich./Harrison HS).
Highlighting the field events were fifth-year senior Jennifer Williams (Burton, Mich./Atherton HS) and freshman Casey Taylor (Chicago Heights, Ill./Marian Catholic HS), who won the high jump and triple jump, respectively. It was the second Jack Harvey crown for Williams, who won the high jump in 2004. She cleared 5-9 1/4 to lead a U-M sweep of the top four spots, followed closely by fifth-year senior Stephanie Linz (Okemos, Mich./Okemos HS) with 5-4. Taylor recorded a mark of 39-5 1/4 to win in her collegiate debut.
Michigan claimed the top two positions in the 4x400-meter relay as the team of Chanelle Campbell (Round Rock, Texas/Round Rock HS), Serita Williams (Crete, Ill./Crete-Monee HS), Erdman and Shavonne Maclin (University Heights, Ohio/Beaumont School) boasted a time of 3:53.12 to edge out their teammates by 2.37 seconds.
A pair of former Wolverines also claimed event titles as Bridgette Maynard won the shot put in 42-5 3/4 and Lindsey Gallo paced a dominant U-M showing in the mile. Gallo clocked 4:48.79 to lead six Wolverines to the finish line, including personal-best performances by junior Erin Webster (Dearborn, Mich./Divine Child HS) and fifth-year senior Ana Gjesdal (La Crescenta, Calif./Crescenta Valley HS).
