ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Three members of the University of Michigan women's soccer team earned national or regional postseason awards as announced Wednesday (Dec. 21). Junior defender/midfielder Katelin Spencer (Brighton, Mich./Brighton) is a second-team honoree on the 2005 NSCAA/adidas College Women Scholar All-America Soccer Team.
Also, sophomore forward Melissa Dobbyn (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson) and freshman defender Skylar Andrews (Dallas, Texas/Plano West Senior) were each honored by Soccer Buzz Magazine, with Dobbyn earning All-Great Lakes Region first-team honors and Andrews being honored with a spot on the Great Lakes all-freshman team.
Spencer, the team's 2005 Big Ten Sportsmanship Award honoree, recorded four assists and eight shots as a tri-captain this season while starting all 21 games. Her outstanding defensive play and one assist in the Big Ten Tournament helped her earn all-tournament honors along with Dobbyn. Spencer and Dobbyn also earned Academic All-Big Ten Conference honors this season.
Each year the NSCAA selects Scholar All-America teams at the high school and college levels. To be eligible for consideration for the team, a player must by at least a junior in academic standing, have no less than a 3.30 cumulative grade point average, start at least 50 percent of the team's games and be nominated by an NSCAA member coach. Spencer, a voice performance major, is one of 25 university-division players (13 first team, 12 second team) on the Scholar All-America team.
Dobbyn, who also earned All-Big Ten Conference first-team honors this season, led the Wolverines in points (32), goals (12), assists (8) and shots (87). She started all 21 games and posted a career-high five-game point streak (Oct. 7-21), tallying three goals and five assists over the five-game span. She also was one of two Wolverines named to the Big Ten all-tournament team, earning the distinction for the second straight season after scoring a goal against both Penn State (Nov. 3) and Illinois (Nov. 4) in consecutive games during the tournament. Dobbyn received Soccer Buzz Freshman All-America honorable mention and Great Lakes Region all-freshman team honors last season.
Andrews was one of only two freshmen to start all 21 games this season for the Wolverines. She earned two conference awards following the 2005 regular season with her All-Big Ten second team and all-freshman team honors. Andrews registered two shots this season from the backline.
Soccer Buzz is an online magazine dedicated to women's collegiate soccer. Its yearly awards honor the best in women's college soccer on both the national and regional levels.
The Wolverines finished the 2005 season with an 8-9-4 record and were runners-up in the Big Ten Tournament.
