U-M Sweeps Swimming Events, Sits Second at EMU

YPSILANTI, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's swimming and diving team used first-place finishes in all of the swimming events Friday (Dec. 2) to accumulate 349 points, which puts the Wolverines in second place after the first day of the 10-team Eastern Michigan Invitational at Jones Natatorium. Michigan trails Eastern Michigan by just 15 points for the top spot.
The Maize and Blue raced to a quick lead, with Emily Brunemann (Crescent Springs, Ky./Notre Dame Academy) and Susan Gilliam (Los Angeles, Calif./Bolles) finishing 1-2 in the 1,650-yard freestyle. Brunemann clocked in at 16:52.21, breaking a meet record and surpassing an NCAA consideration time. Gilliam touched the wall at 17:06.29 for second.
Hannah Smith (Dexter, Mich./Dexter) and Carolina Sierra (Medellin, Colombia/Colegio Palermo de San Jos) took over in the second event of the night, finishing first and second, respectively, in the 200-yard backstroke. Smith clocked in at 2:02.69, while Sierra touched the wall at 2:06.40. Katie Smith (Plano, Texas/Hebron) also had her best showing of the year with a fourth-place time of 2:08.31.
Kaitlyn Brady (Wilmington, Del./Mount Pleasant) and Lindsey Smith (Dexter, Mich./Dexter) followed with the Wolverines' third straight 1-2 finish of the day, in the 100-yard freestyle. Brady's time of 50.91 was just ahead of Smith's 50.95, and both times surpassed consideration marks, with Brady also setting a meet record.
Elsa Larson (Portland, Ore./Lincoln) earned the Wolverines' fourth top finish in a row and her first win of the season with her time of 2:21.46 in the 200-yard breaststroke. Justine Mueller (Monroe, Mich./Monroe) settled for third in the event, clocking in at 2:22.80. Payton Johnson (Champaign, Ill./Centennial) continued Michigan's winning ways with a first-place finish in the 200-yard butterfly, touching the wall in 2:05.45.
Elyse Lee (Albion, Mich./Albion) missed first in the one-meter diving with her runner-up score of 268.15. The quartet of Brady, Abby Seskevics (Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven), Hannah Smith and Lindsey Smith finished off the day with a meet-record time of 3:24.28 in the 400-yard freestyle relay, surpassing an NCAA consideration mark.
The Wolverines jump in the pool again tomorrow (Saturday, Dec. 3) for the second and final day of the Eastern Michigan Invitational. Sessions will start at 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. at Jones Natatorium in Ypsilanti.
