AUSTIN, Texas -- The fourth-ranked University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team jumped up one spot to third place with 351 points during the second day of competition (Friday, Dec. 2) at the Texas Invitational. The night featured one victory, four NCAA automatic qualifying times and seven consideration times for the Wolverines.
The 800-yard freestyle relay team of Davis Tarwater (Knoxville, Tenn./Webb School), Peter Vanderkaay (Rochester, Mich./Adams), Bobby Savulich (Edison, N.J./Saint Joseph) and Chris DeJong (Holland, Mich./Holland) finished more than four seconds under the NCAA 'A' qualifying standard. The quartet's 6:22.76 time also beat their next closest competitor by nearly six seconds. Michigan's 'B' team also posted a qualifying time of its own, finishing fourth with a 'B' standard of 6:35.56.
In the night's first event, the 200-yard medley relay, DeJong swam the first leg, followed by Andrew Albright (Carmel, Ind./Carmel), Tarwater and Bryan Vessels (Dexter, Mich./Dexter). The team clocked in at 1:29.82 for a sixth-place finish.
Brothers Peter and Alex Vanderkaay (Rochester, Mich./Adams) both posted NCAA 'B' standard times to finish second (3:48.34) and fifth (3:52.76), respectively, in the 400-yard individual medley. Dane Grenda (Hockessin, Del./Salesianum) was U-M's third top-10 finish of the event, placing eighth (3:56.51).
The 200-yard freestyle featured four of the top six finishers from last year's NCAA Championships, and the battle for first came down to 2005 champion Simon Burnett of Arizona; U-M's Peter Vanderkaay, who was the national runner-up a year ago; and Tarwater.
Burnett got out quickly and led Tarwater by slim margins at the 50- and 100-yard marks with Vanderkaay in third. A strong 24.05 split by Vanderkaay in the third 50 elevated him to second place, 0.26 behind the leader, but Burnett pulled away in the stretch to win by 0.40 with a time of 1:33.57. Vanderkaay's NCAA automatic time of 1:33.97 fell 0.26 shy of his school record (1:33.71), while Tarwater also hit the NCAA 'A' standard with his third-place time of 1:34.99.
DeJong missed the top-heat cut by 0.34 seconds in the 200 freestyle prelims but came back with a strong showing in the event, placing 11th with an NCAA 'A' standard time of his own (1:35.83). Two events later DeJong recorded an NCAA 'B' standard time in the 100-yard backstroke, with his 48.19 clocking good for fifth place.
Michigan did not place competitors in the final heat of two events -- 100-yard breaststroke and one-meter diving -- during the second day of competition. Kyle Schroeder (Milan, Mich./Milan) earned the Wolverines' top diving finish of the day, placing 10th with 251.15 points, while Albright (56.79) finished 15th in the 100 breaststroke.
The Wolverines will return to the pool tomorrow (Saturday, Dec. 3) for the final day of the Texas Invitational. Prelims will begin at 10 a.m. CST, with the finals being held at 6 p.m.
