AUSTIN, Texas -- Though the fourth-ranked University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team tallied three individual victories on the final night (Saturday, Dec. 3) of the Texas Invitational the team fell back to fourth in the final standings. U-M compiled 474 points in the three-day meet and was narrowly edged by Southern Cal (486) for third place. The meet's winner was not decided until the final event as Arizona's 'B' and 'A' teams finished 1-2 in the 400-yard freestyle relay to beat out Texas 623-619.
Peter Vanderkaay (Rochester, Mich./Adams), Chris DeJong (Holland, Mich./Holland) and Davis Tarwater (Knoxville, Tenn./Webb School) posted their first individual victories of the meet to lead the Maize and Blue. After falling just short in the 500-yard freestyle (Thursday) and 400-yard individual medley (Friday) to Southern Cal's Ous Mellouli, Vanderkaay made sure it would not happen for the third straight day, edging Mellouli by just under two seconds (14:48.22) in the 1,650-yard freestyle.
DeJong notched his first win of the meet in the 200-yard backstroke with an NCAA 'A' standard of 1:42.55. Trailing halfway through the 200-yard butterfly, Tarwater came back to post his second NCAA individual automatic time of the meet.
U-M began the final night of competition as Vanderkaay finally won his first event of the meet in the 1,650-yard freestyle after placing second three times in the meet's previous two days. Matt Patton (Matthews, N.C./Butler) placed fourth in the event with a career-best 15:05.46. The freshman's time also met the NCAA 'A' standard as he touched the wall 0.41 seconds under the cutoff. Jorge Carral (Mexico City, Mexico/The Bolles School, Fla.) also made a strong showing in the event with a career best of his own (15:32.71) and his first NCAA qualifying time (consideration) of the season.
DeJong led the Wolverines to their second consecutive victory of the night in the 200-yard backstroke with his first individual NCAA automatic time of the season. Michigan featured its second swimmer in the event as sophomore Dane Grenda (Hockessin, Del./Salesianum) swam in an event's final heat for the third straight day. His time of 1:48.34 was good for eighth.
Following a seventh-place finish by Peter Vanderkaay in the 100-yard freestyle, Tarwater and Alex Vanderkaay (Rochester, Mich./Adams) each posted NCAA standard times in the 200-yard butterfly. Tarwater's 1:43.93 earned him first place and an 'A' standard time, while Vanderkaay posted his second 'B' time of the meet, finishing in 1:46.19 for fifth place.
In the final event of the three-day competition, Michigan took fourth in the 400-yard freestyle relay. Captains Tarwater, DeJong and Vanderkaay were joined by Bobby Savulich (Edison, N.J./Saint Joseph) to post an NCAA consideration time of 2:56.79.
The Wolverines will take more than a month off before returning to the pool Friday, Jan. 13, against Purdue in West Lafayette, Ind.
