Avant Selected for Academic All-America Second Team

WALTHAM, Mass. -- Senior wide receiver and co-captain Jason Avant (Chicago, Ill./Carver HS) of the University of Michigan football team has been selected to the 2005 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America second team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors Association (CoSIDA). Avant is the 23rd Wolverine to earn first- or second-team Academic All-America honors, and he joins Kenneth Higgins (first team, 1986) as the only U-M wide receivers to gain the distinction.

A three-year letterman and starter for the Wolverines, Avant gained All-Big Ten second team honors from the conference coaches in 2003 and 2004. He is a general studies major in the College of Literature, Science and the Arts. Avant has earned Academic All-Big Ten honors the past two seasons (2003-04) and is a three-time U-M Athletic Academic Achievement award recipient (2002-03-04). He was a semifinalist for the 2005 Draddy Award, known as the "Academic Heisman," presented by the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame.
Avant is the fourth player during head coach Lloyd Carr's tenure to receive Academic All-America honors, joining offensive tackle Jon Jansen (second team, 1998), nose tackle Rob Renes (second team, 1998; first team, 1999) and punter Adam Finley (second team, 2004).
Avant is one of eight Big Ten Conference athletes named to the Academic All-America teams this season (three first-team, five second-team).
