Placekicker Rivas Named Semifinalist for Groza Award

PALM BEACH, Fla. -- The Palm Beach County Sports Institute announced today (Monday, Nov. 7) that University of Michigan junior kicker Garrett Rivas (Tampa, Fla./Jesuit HS) has been selected as one of 20 semifinalists for the 2005 Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Award presented by the FedEx Orange Bowl. The three finalists for the 14th annual Groza Award will be announced on Monday, Nov. 21.

He lists third in field goals scored (45) and field goals attempted (58) on Michigan's career lists and is second with a 77.9 field goal percentage during his career. Rivas has connected on 45 of 58 field goal attempts in his career and is 35 of 42 from inside 40 yards (83.3 pct.). He is tied for fourth in school history with 10 field goals from 40 yards or longer. Rivas has converted 24 of his last 29 field goal attempts dating back to last season. He is seventh among active kickers in field goals scored.
The three finalists will be honored at the 14th annual Lou Groza Award Dinner on Tuesday, Dec. 6, at the Palm Beach Gardens Marriott. The winner will be announced on Thursday, Dec. 8, during the ESPN Home Depot College Football Award Show in Orlando, Fla.
The award, now in its 14th year, is named for NFL Hall of Fame kicker Lou Groza, who played 21 seasons with the Cleveland Browns. Groza won four NFL championships with Cleveland and was named NFL Player of the Year in 1954.
