Four Wolverines Place at Season-Opening EMU Open

YPSILANTI, Mich. -- The University of Michigan wrestling team kicked off its 2005-06 schedule competing unattached at the Eastern Michigan Open on Saturday (Nov. 5). The Wolverines claimed four individuals placewinners, including runner-up honors from sophomore/freshmen Tyrel Todd (Bozeman, Mont./Bozeman HS) and Casey White (Commerce, Mich./Walled Lake Central HS) at 184 and 197 pounds, respectively.
Todd registered a near-perfect 4-1 mark en route to his second-place finish, a one-spot improvement on his career debut performance at last season's EMU Open. Todd dominated the competition en route to the 184-pound final, outscoring his opponents 39-9 with three major decisions. Todd fell just short in the championship match, losing a 7-3 decision against Purdue All-American Ben Wissel.
Similarly, White handily took care of the opposition at 197 pounds to cruise into the championship bout with three quick wins in the preliminary rounds. Like Todd, White controlled throughout his early matches, outscoring his competition 20-3. The Wolverine freshman pushed his final match into overtime but fell to Purdue's Nate Moore 2-1.
Rounding out the Wolverine placewinners were senior/juniors Jeff Marsh (Dexter, Mich./Dexter HS) and Hassen Berri (Dearborn, Mich./Dearborn HS), who claimed third at 157 pounds and fifth at 174 pounds, respectively.
Michigan will continue early-season competition next weekend at the annual Michigan State Open (Nov. 12-13) in East Lansing, Mich. U-M participants will compete unattached.
