Runner-up Marsh Leads U-M Contigent at MSU Open

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Competing unattached in its final preseason tuneup prior to the official start of the 2005-06 season, the University of Michigan wrestling team registered a solid showing at the Michigan State Open, held Saturday and Sunday (Nov. 12-13) at Jenison Field House. The Wolverines boasted seven placewinners against the field of nearly 400 individual wrestlers from 30 schools, including Big Ten Conference rivals Indiana, Ohio State, Michigan State and Northwestern.
Junior/sophomore Jeff Marsh (Dexter, Mich./Dexter HS) turned in the top U-M performance of the weekend, claiming runner-up honors at 157 pounds with a 3-1 record. Marsh battled through the preliminary competition before falling just short of the individual title with a 5-2 loss to top-seeded Eric Neil of Central Michigan. The performance marked a one-spot improvement over his third-place finish at last Saturday's EMU Open (Nov. 5).
Sophomore/freshman Casey White (Commerce, Mich./Walled Lake Central HS) and junior/sophomore Hassen Berri (Dearborn, Mich./Dearborn HS) also registered their second straight top-eight finish of the season as White claimed third at 197 pounds and Berri took eighth at 174. White posted a 3-2 record against purely Big Ten competition with his two losses coming against a pair of two-time NCAA qualifiers.
Junior Jim Shutich (Rockford, Mich./Rockford HS) made his season debut at 125 pounds, compiling a 3-3 record to earn sixth place. The Wolverine rolled through his opening three matches, outscoring his opponents 16-2.
Rounding out the U-M placewinners were junior/sophomore Brad Cusumano (Utica, Mich./Utica HS), who claimed eighth at 141 pounds, and a pair of Wolverine true freshmen -- Justin Chrzanowski (Metamora, Mich./Lapeer West HS) and Braden L'Amoreaux (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston HS) -- who place sixth and eight, respectively, at 133 and 149 pounds.
The Wolverines will solidify the 2005-06 starting rotation on Friday (Nov. 18) with the annual Maize and Blue Intrasquad. The meet is slated for a 7 p.m. at Cliff Keen Arena.
