ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team fell to Wisconsin 2-1 on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 9) at the U-M Soccer Field. Therese Heaton (Wheaton, Ill./Warrenville South) tied the game at 73:46, but Wisconsin tallied the game-winner less than three minutes later as Michigan lost at home for the first time all season.
The first half featured just four shots on goal. The teams traded possession with very little play behind either defense. The Badgers scored first at 20:30. Amy Vermeulen raced down the sideline and sent a cross into the box that Madison Gates (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) could not snare. The ball bounced by a diving Gates and Katy Lindenmuth put it in the net to make the score 1-0.
The Wolverines' best chance of the half came on a free kick attempt by Judy Coffman (San Jose, Calif./Santa Theresa) with 15 minutes left in the half. Her attempt sailed far post but Jamie Artsis' (Chatsworth, Calif./Harvard-Westlake School) header attempt sailed left of the goal. Michigan went into halftime down 1-0.
Michigan created a great chance just five minutes into the second half. Coffman sent a long cross from the left sideline to Melissa Dobbyn (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson) at the top of the box, but Dobbyn's shot sailed high.
The Wolverines finally tied the game 1-1 at 73:46. Dobbyn carried the ball through midfield and fed a pass to Heaton at the top of the 18-yard box. Heaton sent a bouncer in on goal that found its way into the left side of the net. However, the celebration was short-lived as Wisconsin netted the game-winner minutes later. Vermeulen crossed the ball into the middle of the box and Allison Preiss headed it past Gates for the go-ahead goal at 76:16. Despite holding the ball in the offensive zone for a majority of the second half, Michigan could not net another goal and fell 2-1.
The Wolverines go on the road next Friday (Oct. 14) to Champaign, Ill., to take on Illinois at 7 p.m. CDT.
