LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Three members of the University of Michigan women's tennis team competed in the prequalifying round of the 2005 Riveria/ITA All-American Championships, held Saturday and Sunday (Oct. 1-2) at the Los Angeles Tennis Center, but none was able to move into qualifying action.
Senior Debra Streifler (Highland Park, Ill./Highland Park HS) and juniors Kara Delicata (LaSalle, Ontario/Sandwich Secondary School) and Elizabeth Exon (Irvine, Calif./Woodbridge HS) all suffered opening-round defeats in the 64-player singles draw, while Exon and Streifler dropped a second-round decision in the 32-team doubles bracket.
Competing for the first time at the national tournament, Streifler was dealt a 6-1, 6-0 loss at the hands of eighth-seeded Amanda Fink of Southern Cal on Saturday (Oct. 1). Exon did not fare much better, falling 6-0, 6-3 to Ksenia Tokarieva of Mississippi. Delicata's 6-4, 6-3 setback to seventh seed and No. 111-ranked Sylvia Kosakowski of Pepperdine was the closest match of the day for the Wolverines.
Exon and Streifler, who advanced to the second round in doubles after a walkover, fell to top-seeded and No. 54-ranked Dominka Dieskova and Anna Cecilia Olivos of Oregon 8-6 on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 2).
Delicata and senior Nina Yaftali (Westlake Village, Calif./Westlake HS) will pair together in the 32-team qualifying doubles draw, which begins Tuesday (Oct. 4) at the Riveria Tennis Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
