PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. -- Senior Nina Yaftali (Westlake Village, Calif./Westlake HS) and junior Kara Delicata (LaSalle, Ontario/Sandwich Secondary School) of the University of Michigan women's tennis team dropped a first-round decision in the 32-team doubles qualifying draw Tuesday afternoon (Oct. 4) at the Riveria/ITA All-American Championships.
Yaftali and Delicata, who are ranked No. 30 in the ITA preseason national rankings, fell 8-2 to No. 40-ranked Melissa Anderson and Elsa O'Riain of Harvard. It marked the first-ever collegiate match for Yaftali and Delicata as a doubles pairing.
Yaftali and Delicata lost a tight match in consolation play today (Wednesday, Oct. 5), falling 8-6 to Texas A&M's No. 23-ranked Sarah Foster and Anna Lubinsky in the first round.
This was the second straight year that Delicata has competed in the national tournament. Last season, Delicata and Michelle DaCosta (2002-05) were eliminated in the first round of the 16-team doubles main draw. Yaftali was playing in the ITA All-American for the first time in her career.
The Riviera/ITA All-American Championships is one of three national collegiate tennis championships this season and features the top players in NCAA Division I tennis.
Yaftali and Delicata will return home and join the rest of the Wolverines at the 2005 Wilson/ITA Midwest Regional Championships, scheduled for Oct. 20-25 at Michigan State's Indoor Tennis Facility in East Lansing, Mich.
