ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's water polo team will get an early chance to look at some of its incoming freshman players in an organized event when the Wolverines play two exhibition games Sunday (Oct. 16) at Jenison High School's new 50-meter aquatic complex in Jenison, Mich. The Wolverines will face Purdue at 3:30 p.m. and Michigan State at 4:30 p.m.
The fall exhibition is being hosted by Jenison High School, where former Michigan All-America swimmer and water polo player Jen Crisman (1997-2001) is the aquatic director.
"This allows us to accomplish a few things," said fourth-year head coach Matt Anderson. "We are able to get an early look at some of our newcomers, and we are able to help generate community interest in the incredible 50-meter multi-use facility that they have recently built over in Jenison. While we are going into Spartan country I expect us to do some good things and give us a chance to change up the pace of only practicing."
The exhibition will be a homecoming of sorts for sophomore Michelle Keeley (Rockford, Mich./Rockford), who was the state MVP while attending Rockford High School, and freshman Kate Zondervan (Jenison, Mich./Jenison), who graduated from and played for Jenison High School.
U-M will start its 2006 regular season on Feb. 4 when the Wolverines host the Michigan Kick-Off at Canham Natatorium. The tournament will feature Indiana, Long Beach State, UC San Diego, Colorado State, Slippery Rock and Michigan State.
