Wolverines Continue Competition at Michigan Invitational

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's tennis team continued play at the 2005 Michigan Invitational Saturday (Jan. 8), with two Wolverine singles players taking home victories after U-M won two of three doubles matches to open the day.
Senior Michelle DaCosta (Huber Heights, Ohio/Wayne HS) and sophomore Kara Delicata (LaSalle, Ontario/Sandwich Secondary) defeated Louisiana State's Lauren Seaman and Staten Spencer 8-4, while junior Nina Yaftali (Westlake Village, Calif./Westlake HS) and sophomore Elizabeth Exon (Irvine, Calif./Woodridge HS) made easy work of LSU's Camila Caliari and Marina Chiarelli, 8-0.
Exon also found herself on the winning end in singles, posting a 7-6(5), 6-3 victory over Georgia Tech's Kelly Anderson. Senior Leanne Rutherford (Calgary, Alberta/National Sports School) earned her 60th career singles win at Michigan with a 6-2, 6-3 defeat of Caliari in the last match remaining on the courts.
The Wolverines return to the Varsity Tennis Center tomorrow (Sunday, Jan. 9) for the final day of competition. U-M will match up against Georgia Tech in doubles beginning at 9 a.m. before closing out the tournament against Eastern Michigan in singles at 12:30 p.m.

The Michigan Invitational is based on a "hidden dual-match" format, where teams square off against each other but the outcome of the match is not scored as a team effort. However, each match counts toward the individual players' records and rankings.
