ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's tennis team finished the 2005 Michigan Invitational in winning form, posting victories in seven of 10 matches on the final day of action (Sunday, Jan. 9) at the Varsity Tennis Center. The Wolverines swept all five singles matches against Eastern Michigan after splitting four doubles matches with Georgia Tech.
Senior Michelle DaCosta (Huber Heights, Ohio/Wayne HS) and sophomore Kara Delicata (LaSalle, Ontario/Sandwich Secondary) finished the tournament with a 2-0 record after dominating Georgia Tech's Alison Silverio and Kristi Miller 8-1. Junior Debra Streifler (Highland Park, Ill./Highland Park HS) earned her 50th career doubles victory at U-M, teaming with sophomore Lindsey Goldstein (Highland Park, Ill./Highland Park HS) to defeat Esther van Londen and Whitney McCray, 9-7.
Streifler and Goldstein put forth equally impressive performances in singles, as both posted straight-set victories on adjacent courts in the afternoon session against Eastern Michigan. Streifler shut out Catherina Bestahorn (6-0, 6-0), while Goldstein blew past Flavia Micati (6-1, 6-2).
Delicata made it three wins in a row for Michigan with a 6-1, 6-1 decision over Elizabeth Syrova, and junior Nina Yaftali (Westlake Village, Calif./Westlake HS) kept things rolling with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Laura Fernandez.
Senior Leanne Rutherford (Calgary, Alberta/National Sports School) clinched the singles sweep with a maraton win over Yana Parfenyuk. After dropping the first set 6-4, Rutherford battled back to take the second frame by an identical score. Parefenyuk rebounded from a 4-1 deficit in the deciding set to tie things at 5-5, but Rutherford took the next two games to win 7-5.
The Wolverines open the dual match season at the Varsity Tennis Center next Saturday (Jan. 15) when they host DePaul at 10 a.m.

The Wolverines finished the three-day event with an overall singles record of 12-11 (.522) and a doubles mark of 6-4 (.600).
The Michigan Invitational was based on a "hidden dual-match" format, where teams square off against each other but the outcome of the match is not scored as a team effort. However, each match counts toward the individual players' records and rankings.
