This Week's Lineup -- at Indiana/Ball State
The No. 7 University of Michigan field hockey team (5-3, 0-0 Big Ten) hits the road next weekend, traveling south for a pair of contests in the Hoosier state. On Friday (Sept. 24), U-M kicks off Big Ten Conference competition with a 4 p.m. match against No. 16 Indiana in Bloominton, Ind. The Wolverines return to the field on Sunday (Sept. 26) in Muncie, Ind. to square off against Ball State for 1 p.m. EST/CDT start.
Scouting the Hoosiers
While the all-time series between Indiana and Michigan is knotted at 4-4, the Wolverines have gone 4-0 against the Hoosiers since they re-instituted their program in 2000, outscoring IU by a 27-1 margin. In last season's meeting between the two programs, senior April Fronzoni claimed the U-M career points record as the Wolverines registered four unassisted goals to blank Indiana 4-0 in Ann Arbor. Scouting the Cardinals
U-M will face off against Ball State for the 15th time with U-M holding the 9-5 advantage in the all-time series, dating back to 1980. Michigan has won the last five contests and have outscored the Cardinals 25-5 during that time. The last time the Wolverines fell to Ball State was during the 1997 season when the Cardinals shut out U-M 4-0 in Muncie, Ind. In the last meeting between the two programs -- on Sept. 8, 2002 -- the Wolverines rallied from an early deficit to defeat Ball State 5-1 in Ann Arbor. STX/NFHCA Division I National Coaches Poll
The Wolverines jumped two position to the No. 7 spot in latest STX/NFHCA Division I National Coaches Poll, released on Tuesday (Sept. 21). Michigan is one of four Big Ten schools ranked among the top 20 in the nation, along with No. 4 Michigan State, No. 16 Indiana and No. 17 Penn State. National statistics, compiled by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA), are released every Tuesday during the season. Senior Jessica Blake ranks fifth in the nation in both goals (11) and goals per game (1.375) while holding the seventh spot in points (24) and fifth in points per game (3.000). Senior Adrienne Hortillosa is listed among the nation's assist leaders with a share of the 11th spot in assists (6) and 15th in assists per game (.750). Hortillosa also is 11th in points (20) and 16th in points per game (2.500).
Michigan leads the Big Ten Conference in four major statistical categories -- goals (35), goals per game (4.38), points (90) and shots (176). Individually, senior Adrienne Hortillosa leads the conference in assists and assists per game while senior Jessica Blake ranks second in goals, goals per game, points and points per game. Blake Nabs Big Ten Weekly Honor
Senior Jessica Blake (Perth, Western Australia/St. Mary's Anglican) was named Big Ten Conference co-Offensive Player of the Week on Monday (Sept. 20) for the first time in her U-M career following a five-goal weekend in the Wolverines' wins against Central Michigan and Northeastern. Blake scored a career-high four goals to pace the Wolverines to a dominant 11-0 victory over Central Michigan and added an unassisted first-half tally in U-M's 3-0 victory against No. 8-ranked Northeastern.
Lending a Helping Hand
With her pair of assists against Central Michigan (Sept. 17), senior captain Adrienne Hortillosa brought her career total to 33 helpers during her four seasons at Michigan, breaking a tie with Jennifer Lupinski (1992-95) to gain sole possession of the spot on U-M's all-time assists list. Hortillosa needs 23 assists to reach the second position, currently held by Courtney Reid (1997-2000) with 56 career assists. Two-time NFHCA All-American Catherine Foreman (1998-2001) owns the U-M record for most career assists with 61.
Climbing the Charts
With 20 points already this season, senior Adrienne Hortillosa is just three points shy of matching her previous season-best mark. The Wolverine captain brought her career total to 85 points spanning her four seasons at Michigan, moving her into the ninth position on U-M's career points list. Hortillosa needs two more points to reach the eighth spot, currently held by Marty Maugh (87, 1979-82).
The Streak
Senior Jessica Blake extended her scoring streak to eight games with her five-goal weekend against Central Michigan and Northeastern. Blake currently leads U-M in scoring with 24 points (11-2-24) and has tallied at least one point in each of the Wolverines' games in this season.
Career Year
Senior Jessica Blake has already recorded a career-high 11 goals through the Wolverines's eight games in 2004 and needs just three more points to reach her career-high point total on the season. Sophomore Mary Fox (St. Louis, Mo./Cor Jesu Academy) has also registered career highs this season in assists (6) and points (10) while matching her career-high mark in goals (2).
Iron Women
Senior captain Katy Moyneur (Escondido, Calif./San Pasqual HS) has not missed a single game during her four seasons at Michigan, starting all 76 U-M contests during that time. Senior captain Adrienne Hortillosa has also seen action in the Wolverines' 76 games -- with 59 starts -- during her four years while junior Lori Hillman (Gibbsboro, N.J./Eastern Regional HS) has started in 53 consecutive games in her third season at Michigan.
Free Hits
After allowing nine goals in their first three games of the season, the Wolverines have surrendered just three goals in their last five contests and won three games by shutout in that span.
Michigan's 11 goals against Central Michigan (Sept. 17) were the Wolverines' highest single-game goal total in six seasons, dating back to Sept. 11, 1998 when U-M coincidently recorded an 11-0 against Central Michigan.
The Wolverines' 42 total shots against CMU was the most since August 29, 1999 when Michigan fired 47 at the cage in a 6-1 decision against Radford.
Junior/sophomore Katie Morris (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer HS) fired a team-leading 11 shots at the Central Michigan cage, including eight shots on goal.
Sophomore/freshman Eleanor Martin (Anchorage, Ky./Louisville Collegiate School) and freshmen Lucia Belassi (Paysandu, Uruguay/Liceo #1) and Lauren Conforzi (Mississauga, Ontario/Gordon Grayson Secondary) each tallied their first collegiate goals in Michigan's victory over CMU while freshman Ashley Lennington (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle HS) recorded her first collegiate point with an assist in the second half.
On the Horizon
The Wolverines will return home for a pair of matches on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 2-3, hosting Northwestern and Harvard at Ocker Field. Michigan is slated to play the Wildcats at 1 p.m. on Friday before closing out the weekend with a 1 p.m. contest against the Crimson on Sunday.
