DURHAM, N.H. -- The University of Michigan field hockey team wrapped up its season-opening road series with a dominant performance against New Hampshire on Thursday (Sept. 2), defeating the Wildcats 8-1 at Memorial Field. With the victory, U-M evened its season record at 2-2 (.500) after starting the 2004 campaign with back-to-back losses.
With eight goals in the contest, including six in the first half, the Wolverines displayed their greatest offensive production of the season. Nine different U-M players tallied a point in the victory as sophomore Mary Fox (St. Louis, Mo./Cor Jesu Academy) and Katie Morris (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer HS) each registered the first multi-point effort of their careers.
Fox opened the scoring for the Wolverines, earning her first goal of the season at the 3:14 mark after applying pressure following a Michgian penalty corner. Senior Jessica Blake (Perth, Western Australia/St. Mary's Anglican) and Morris both took advantage of a charging Wildcat goalkeeper to send shots into an open cage and give U-M an early 3-0 advantage.
After Caitlin Gillen recorded the lone New Hampshire goal at the 17:16 mark of the game, sophomore Jill Civic (Wescoville, Pa./Emmaus HS) and junior Lori Hillman (Gibbsboro, N.J./Eastern Regional HS) scored just 1:21 apart to extend the Michigan lead late in the frame. Junior/sophomore Nicole Lonsway (Rockville, Md./Thomas S. Wooten HS) rounded out the Wolverines' first-half scoring in the final minute with her first collegiate goal off a rebounded shot, giving U-M a 6-1 lead at the halftime intermission.
The Wolverines added another pair of goals in the second half -- coming just over two minutes apart -- to add greater assurance to their victory. Junior/sophomore Lauren MacMillan (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson HS) earned her first career goal at 50:05 after roofing a shot to the far post on a pass from freshman Lucia Belassi (Paysandu, Uruguay/Liceo #1), giving the Wolverine newcomer her first career assist. Morris notched her second goal of the game -- redirecting a hard centering pass from Fox -- at the 52:25 mark.
Sophomore Beth Riley (Palmyra, Pa./Palmyra Area HS) and senior Molly Maloney (Lake Bluff, Ill./Lake Forest HS) each saw playing time in the U-M cage as Riley collected one save in the first half and Maloney stopped all three shots she faced in the second frame. On New Hampshire side, Chritine Buckley recorded 16 saves, including 11 in the first half. Overall, Michigan outshot the Wildcats 27-10 in the contest and out-cornered them 11-3.
U-M will return to the field on Friday (Sept. 10) for its home opener against Syracuse, kicking off a four-game homestand in Ann Arbor, Mich. The game is slated for a 3 p.m. EDT start at Ocker Field.
