ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan field hockey team saw its three-game winning streak halted by Old Dominion on Saturday (Sept. 11) after giving up three unanswered goals to fall 3-2 in overtime at Phyllis Ocker Field.
The Monarchs scored twice during the final 12 minutes of regulation play -- the second coming with just 1:41 remaining -- to knot the score at 2-2 before Jennifer Angat recorded the game-winner on a deflection off a U-M defender at the 82:32 mark of the contest.
U-M had held a two-goal advantage until the 58:42 mark when Dana Sensening put Old Dominion on the board with a low shot past Wolverine sophomore goalkeeper Beth Riley (Palmyra, Pa./Palmyra Area HS) following a Monarch corner. Caroline Nichols evened the score 10 minutes later -- at the 68:19 mark -- taking a goal-mouth pass from Jennifer Angat and tapping it in from the right side.
Junior/sophomore Katie Morris (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer HS) had given the Wolverines the game's first advantage just 47 seconds into the second frame, tipping a shot by sophomore Mary Fox (St. Louis, Mo./Cor Jesu Academy) into the upper left corner past Monarch goalkeeper Mary Cate Gordon. Senior Jessica Blake (Perth, Western Australia/St. Mary's Anglican) connected for her second goal of the weekend five minutes later, lifting a shot from the top right side of the circle into the farside corner. Senior captain Adrienne Hortillosa (Chula Vista, Calif./Bonita Vista HS) collected an assist on the play, extending her scoring streak to six games.
The Wolverines outshot Old Dominion 19-13, including a 12-1 advantage in the first half, and out-cornered the Monarchs 6-4. For Michigan, Riley recorded five saves on Old Dominion's eight shots on goal, while Gordon made seven saves on U-M's nine shots on goal.
The Wolverines (3-3) will continue their homestand next weekend, hosting another pair of non-conference matches at Ocker Field in Ann Arbor. U-M will square off against intrastate rival Central Michigan at 3 p.m. Friday (Sept. 17) before returning to the field on Sunday (Sept. 19) against Northeastern with a noon start.

Head Coach Marcia Pankratz
On the game ... "I think it really came down to conditioning. I don't think they lost their composure out there, but Old Dominion was pretty unrelenting and we pretty much gave them the game at the end. They were fitter and more relentless in the last 10 minutes. I thought we played well in the first half; we had a lot of chances. If we could have done a better job of finishing, we would have been up a couple more goals. I think we lost the game because we were too tired to play and work at the end."
