ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan senior/junior Lindsey Gallo (Freehold, N.J./Howell HS), a member of the women's track and field team, has been named the 2004 Verizon University Division Women's Track Academic All-American of the Year, it was announced on Thursday (June 24).
With her selection, Gallo joins four-time men's track and field NCAA champion Kevin Sullivan (1994-98) as the only U-M student-athletes to garner the prestigious academic honor. Additionally, Gallo becomes the fourth women's track student-athlete to earn a spot on the Academic All-America team -- the first to make first-team selection -- in the 27-year history of the program.
A business administration major in the prestigious U-M Business School and a three-time Academic All-Big Ten Conference recipient, Gallo was a three-time NCAA All-American during the 2004 campaign as a middle-distance specialist. The Wolverine claimed fourth place in the 1,500-meter run at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, capping a successful outdoor season in which she boasted the second-fastest 1,500-meter time in school history en route to the NCAA Mideast Regional title and became just the fourth athlete in Big Ten history to claim both the 800- and 1,500-meter individual crowns.
Gallo earned double All-America citations at the NCAA Indoor Championships, finishing sixth in the Mile run and anchoring the Wolverines' seventh-place distance medley relay. During the fall cross country season, Gallo became the first U-M harrier to earn three consecutive All-Big Ten first team honors as she helped guide the Wolverines to their second straight conference title.
To be nominated for Verizon Academic All-America honors, student-athletes must be of sophomore athletic and academic standing, must be a starter or important reserve and carry a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or higher. Nominated student-athletes are then selected by a vote of the members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) within their respective district.
