NORRISTOWN, Pa. -- The Collegiate Water Polo Association announced Thursday (April 22) that University of Michigan freshman driver Shana Welch (Larksville, Pa./Wyoming Valley West HS) has been named the CWPA Western Division Player of the Week for her play at the Division Championship on April 17-18 in Ann Arbor, Mich.
Welch led Michigan to its third straight CWPA Division Championship title, scoring eight goals and adding a pair of assists in the tournament. Welch started the weekend with a hat trick on three-for-three shooting against Salem International in the second round. In the semifinal against Washington & Jefferson, Welch notched her 10th hat trick of the season on three-for-three shooting and added two steals. She also broke a U-M record with her 49th goal of the season. Then in the title game against No. 10 Indiana, Welch paced the Wolverines with a pair of goals, scoring her 50th and 51st goals of the season.
This is the second time in her career that Welch has won the CWPA Player of the Week award. She was honored earlier this season for her play at the Fluid Four Challenge on April 8.
Welch joins three other Wolverines who have won the award this season. Betsey Armstrong (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron HS) has claimed the title three times (Jan. 29, March 4, March 11), Sheetal Narsai (Commerce, Calif./Bell Gardens HS) was honored on Feb. 19, and Casey Kerney won the award on Feb. 12.
The seventh-ranked Wolverines (28-8, 8-0 CWPA) compete in the Eastern Championship on April 23-25 in Lewisburg, Pa. The winner of the Eastern Championship will represent the CWPA at the NCAA Final Four.
