TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Graduate/senior Jessie Allen-Young (Loveland, Colo./Thompson Valley HS) began her University of Michigan women's track and field career with a pair of 1,500-meter run victories as the Wolverines opened their outdoor season at the Florida State Relays, which concluded Saturday (March 20). Allen-Young claimed two of U-M's four event wins at the Mike Long Track.
Senior/junior Andrea Parker (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson HS) and the 4x800-meter relay foursome of Anna Jones (Omaha, Neb./Marian HS), Arianne Field (Kalamazoo, Mich./Hackett HS), Parker and Erin Webster (Dearborn, Mich./Divine Child HS) prevailed for U-M's other two wins over the three days of Michigan action at the FSU Relays.
Allen-Young, a 2003 graduate of Dartmouth College, donned the Maize and Blue for the first time during the track season, as she only has outdoor eligibility left in her career. Friday afternoon (March 19), in her first track race for Michigan, Allen-Young paced the field and took home top honors in the Garnet section of the 1,500-meter with a winning time of 4:31.60. Freshman Jackie Gaydos (Allen Park, Mich./Allen Park HS) finished second in the race with a time of 4:32.21.
Allen-Young then returned to the track Saturday afternoon to win the Gold section of the 1,500 with a time of 4:33.96. Like the previous day's race, Allen-Young was followed across the finish line by a fellow Wolverine, as Parker garnered runner-up honors in 4:35.75.
The 4x800-meter relay squad gave Michigan its first win of the three-day track meet when Jones, Field, Parker and Webster combined for a winning time of 9:04.82. It marks the second consecutive year in which the Wolverines won the event at the FSU Relays.
Parker then followed with an individual victory of her own when she crossed the finish line of the Garnet section of the 800-meter run with a time of 2:17.03.
Graduate/senior Lindsey Stephenson (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg HS) finished second in the javelin throw with a NCAA Regional qualifying distance of 150-7 in her first competition in the Maize and Blue. Stephenson graduated from Columbia University in 2003.
In other action on the track, Vera Simms (Mililani, Hawaii/Mililani HS) came within 0.03 seconds of matching her school-record time in the 400-meter hurdles when she finished the race with a time of 58.21. Her school record is 58.18, set during the semifinals of the USATF Championships (6/20/03).
The Wolverines will send three throwers to the Gainesville, Fla., next Wednesday through Saturday (March 24-27) for the Florida Relays.
