Kelemen Wins Platform at Zones, Qualifies for Nationals

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Senior Tealin Kelemen (Riverton, N.J./Moorestown Friends School) of the University of Michigan women's swimming and diving team had a spectacular showing at the NCAA Zone C Diving Meet, held Friday through Sunday (March 12-14) at the Indiana University's Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatics Center.
Kelemen qualified for the NCAA Championships thanks to a runner-up finish on the one-meter board Friday, placed fifth on the three-meter board Saturday and won the platform competition Sunday. It marks the first time in Kelemen's four-year career that she has earned a trip to the national championships.
Kelemen, one of 11 female divers from Zone C to qualify for the NCAA Championships, began the weekend with a second-place showing on the one-meter springboard with a score of 535.35. Kelemen placed below Notre Dame's Meghan Perry-Eaton's winning mark of 564.30. U-M junior Alexis Goolik (Highland, Ind./Highland HS) took 16th place (474.35), while freshman Ellen Van Cleve (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer HS) scored 214.05 in the preliminaries.
Saturday's three-meter competition saw Kelemen finish in fifth place with a score of 474.65. Goolik finished 16th (421.50) and Van Cleve placed 25th with a score of 234.20.
Kelemen closed out the meet by taking top honors on the plaform board on Sunday with a career-best score of 402.40. Goolik scored a career-best 341.10 for ninth place, while Van Cleve came in 14th (295.80).
Kelemen will join nine Wolverine swimmers at the 2004 NCAA Championships next Thursday through Saturday (March 18-20) at Texas A&M University's Student Recreation Center Natatorium in College Station, Texas. Preliminaries will be held daily at 11 a.m. CST, with finals starting at 7 p.m. CST.
