Michigan Surrenders Just One Match Against Ball State

MUNCIE, Ind. -- The University of Michigan men's tennis team improved to 8-1 on the dual match season with a 6-1 victory over Ball State on Saturday (March 13) at the Muncie YMCA. The Wolverines swept all three contests in doubles before earning wins in five of six singles matches.
Senior Anthony Jackson (Glendale, Wis./Nicolet HS) and freshman Brian Hung (Hong Kong, China/Sagemont Virtual School) posted an 8-6 win over Matt Baccarani and Patrick Thompson at the top doubles position. Junior Michael Rubin (Canton, Ohio/Canton Central Catholic HS) and freshman Ryan Heller (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North HS) defeated Matt Laramore and Brad Rhodes at No. 2. At the third spot, junior Vinny Gossain (Okemos, Mich./Okemos HS) and freshman Steve Peretz (Brooklyn, N.Y./The Dwight School) won their sixth match in seven tries, bettering Paul Newman and Klint Knable 8-5.
Heller continued his stellar first-year campaign with his ninth straight singles victory, defeating Laramore 6-2, 7-5 at No. 3. Hung outlasted Thompson 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 at No. 2 for his seventh win in eight matches, and Peretz improved his dual match singles record to 8-1 with a 6-4, 1-6, 6-4 win at No. 4.
Junior David Anving (Tvaaker, Sweden/Varbergs Gymnasieskola) came back to defeat Newman 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 for his sixth straight victory. Sophomore Carey Rubin (Canton, Ohio/Canton Central Catholic HS) rounded out the U-M victors with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Rhodes at No. 6.
The Wolverines have a week off before returning to the court on Tuesday, March 23, for a mid-week meeting with Notre Dame. The match with the Fighting Irish is scheduled for a 4 p.m. start at the Varsity Tennis Center.

N O T E S
U-M has won the doubles point against six of nine opponents this season.
With his win with Brian Hung at No. 1, Anthony Jackson reached his 50th career doubles victory at Michigan. In four seasons, Jackson has compiled an overall doubles mark of 50-53, including a 37-35 record in dual match competition.
Michigan has never lost to Ball State in eight all-time meetings.
Ryan Heller remains undefeated in his dual match singles career (9-0).
 With the win, Mark Mees reached his 60th career coaching victory at Michigan.
