PALO ALTO, Calif. -- The University of Michigan women's water polo team dropped a pair of games today (Sunday, Feb. 8) to finish sixth at the Stanford Invitational. The eighth-ranked Wolverines (6-3) fell in the morning session to No. 2 Southern Cal, 14-3, as USC took a commanding lead with a seven-goal run to start the game and never looked back. In the fifth-place contest, Michigan took No. 9 Hawaii into overtime before falling 13-11, with the Rainbow Wahine using three goals in the second extra session to claim the victory.
In the game against Southern Cal, the Women of Troy struck first, taking a 1-0 lead with 4:07 to go in the opening quarter. USC then rattled off six more goals before the Wolverines got on the board with three minutes to play before the half. Vickie Brown's (Santa Ana, Calif./Foothill HS) first goal of the season made the score 7-1 with 2:47 to go in the second quarter. However, USC answered with just 22 seconds remaining to take an 8-1 lead into the locker room.
The Wolverines got to work quickly in the second half, receiving a pair of goals from Jenna Green (Atherton, Calif./Menlo HS) in the first 90 seconds of the third quarter. However, U-M was not able to muster any more offense in the game, while USC scored six more goals before the buzzer.
In the fifth-place contest, the Wolverines gained an early advantage with a goal from Julie Nisbet (Santa Barbara, Calif./Santa Barbara HS) with 3:15 to go in the opening period. Hawaii answered just 26 seconds later, but Shana Welch (Larksville, Pa./Wyoming Valley West HS) regained Michigan's lead with 19 seconds to play in the first quarter.
Hawaii knotted the score at 2-2 early in the second period, but U-M was able to once again establish a one-goal lead. This time Stephanie Rupp (Hemet, Calif./Hemet HS) found the back of the net, making the score 3-2 in favor of the Wolverines. The Warriors responded with two straight goals to take a 4-3 advantage with 1:47 to play in the half. Casey Kerney (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park HS) tied the score at four, but two more Hawaii goals gave the Warriors a 6-4 lead with 34 seconds on the clock. U-M closed the gap to within one before intermission courtesy of Jo Antonsen's (Agoura Hills, Calif./Agoura HS) score with eight seconds remaining in the half.
Neither team was able to get its offense going early in the second half, until Kerney scored her second goal at the 2:57 mark of the third quarter to make the score 6-6. Sixteen seconds later, Hawaii had regained a one goal lead, but back-to-back goals from Megan Hausmann (San Diego, Calif./Bishop's HS) and Antonsen put Michigan up 8-7 heading into the fourth quarter.
Hausmann notched her second goal less than one minute into the fourth period, making the score 9-7 in favor of the Wolverines. However, Hawaii would not go away as the Warriors scored a pair of goals to tie the game and send the contest into overtime. The tying goal came with just 25 seconds to go in the game.
In the first three minutes of overtime, Hawaii struck first, taking a 10-9 lead at the 1:21 mark. With 10 seconds to go before the second extra session, Sheetal Narsai (Commerce, Calif./Bell Gardens HS) tied the game at 10-10.
The Maize and Blue struck first in the second overtime period as Kerney completed her hat trick with 2:34 left on the clock. Hawaii then went on a three-goal run, including one as time expired, to claim the victory.
The Wolverines will travel back across the country to compete in the Princeton Invitational on Feb. 14-15.
