Michigan Head Coach Cheryl Burnett
On the win ... "After we played so well early in the year and came away with the big win at Santa Barbara, we came out flat our last two games and lost a lot of confidence, actually. I really felt UNLV was as good of a team as we have played this year. On tape, they were very impressive athletically and their go-to players are special, so it feels good to win a one-basket game. We have played so many games down to the last possession and our players really fought through it. We are very happy."
On the last shot ... "In the past I have used the end of practice to work on last-second possessions, but with the youth on this team, we are still putting in some many of our principles that we have not worked on special situations as much as I would like. First, we must get the ball inbounds. We wanted to get a dribble penetration or we wanted to make sure Tabitha (Pool) got the ball in her hands. Krista (Clement) did a great job of keeping her composure and Kelly (Helvey) made a great back cut and we got the win."
On the defense ... "Our players are starting to realize what our game preparations are about and what the game strategy is. We want to play certain players a certain way. Becky Flippin did an exceptional job of executing the game plan defensively in the first half. She was very good for the whole game but exceptional in the first half defending Moore. We also did a good job on their post player. UNLV did a nice job of finding ways to get those kids looks, but we stayed with the plan."
On the play of Katie Dierdorf and Jessica Starling ... "Katie and Jessica were exceptional tonight. Katie gave us something tonight that only she is capable of giving this team and that is a post player who can run the floor in defensive transition, get in the lane and slow down their running game. She also gave us a lot of confidence rebounding and defending. Her minutes were very quality tonight as were Jessica's."
