Michigan Signs Seven Recruits During Early Signing Period

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan women's swimming coach Jim Richardson announced today (Wednesday, Nov. 24) that the Wolverines signed seven student-athletes to National Letters of Intent during the early signing period. Courtney Beyer (Los Altos Hills, Calif./Los Altos HS), Emily Brunemann (Crescent Springs, Ky./Notre Dame Academy), Payton Johnson (Champaign, Ill./Centennial HS), Noelle Martin (Winston-Salem, N.C./Reynolds HS), Lori Morton (Portage, Mich./Central HS), Christine Nichols (Fairfax, Va./Woodson HS) and Hannah Smith (Dexter, Mich./Dexter HS) will all join U-M for the 2005-06 season.
"I think this is one of the most talented classes we have recruited; every swimmer is a high school All-American," commented Richardson. "Everyone in this class is excited about becoming a Wolverine. They all have high goals and the work ethic to realize those goals. They are all a great fit for the University of Michigan and our program. They will represent this university well, both in and out of the pool."
Beyer specializes in the 100-yard (56.96) and 200-yard (2:03.22) butterfly and 200-yard (2:05.25) and 400-yard (4:26.88) individual medley events. She also competes for the Palo Alto Stanford Aquatics club team.
Brunemann is a three-time All-American in the 200-yard (1:53.10), 500-yard (4:56.80) and 1,650-yard (16:53.30) freestyle events. The 2004 YMCA long course national champion in the 400-meter freestyle, Brunemann also competes for the Anderson Baraccudas. Johnson has earned All-America honors in the 100-yard butterfly (54.77) and is the Illinois state champion in the event. She is a member of the Aquachiefs Swim Team.
Martin has collected All-America recognition in the 50-yard (23.50) and 100-yard (51.40) freestyles and the 100-yard butterfly (57.50). She is a member of the Winston-Salem YMCA Swim Team. Morton, who was the runner-up in the 100-yard butterfly (57.10) at the 2004 Michigan State Championships, competes for the Great Lakes Aquatics Swim Club.
Nichols has earned All-America laurels in the 50-yard (23.50), 100-yard (51.01) and 200-yard (1:51.56) freestyles and the 200-yard individual medley (2:04.70). She is a member of the Burke Swim Team. Rounding out the list is Smith, who is the younger sister of sophomore standout Lindsey Smith (Dexter, Mich./Dexter HS). She was the 2004 Michigan state champion in the 50-yard freestyle (23.44) and the 100-yard backstroke (56.36) and competes for the Ann Arbor Swim Club.
The Wolverines will graduate five seniors following the 2004-05 campaign. Lesley Barnet (Bedminster, N.J./Bernards HS), Tracy Egnatuk (Albion, Mich./Albion HS), Alexis Goolik (Highland, Ind./Highland HS), Amy McCullough (West Bloomfield, Mich./Mercy HS) and Erica Watts (Carmel, Ind./Carmel HS) will exhaust their eligibility after the completion of the season.
