Wolverines Dominate All-Big Ten Conference Honors
Edwards, Baas and Hart Collect Individual Awards
PARK RIDGE, Ill. -- The Big Ten Conference office announced the 2004 all-conference teams and individual award winners today (Nov. 23), with the co-champion University of Michigan football team picking up three individual awards and placing nine players on the All-Big Ten first team. The Wolverines' nine all-conference first team performers was four more than the five achieved by second place Wisconsin, Iowa and Minnesota.
Senior wide receiver Braylon Edwards (Detroit, Mich./Bishop Gallagher HS) was named the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year on both the coaches and media ballots after receiving unanimous All-Big Ten first team honors from both groups. Edwards led the league in every major receiving category from wire-to-wire this season.
Continuing the Wolverines' offensive domination of the conference awards was fifth-year senior center and co-captain David Baas (Sarasota, Fla./Riverview HS), the coaches' pick as the Big Ten Offensive Lineman of the Year. Baas became the 12th player in U-M history to earn All-Big Ten first team honors at least three times during his career, gaining a first-team nod from the coaches and second-team accolades from the media. Switching from left guard to center at the outset of the conference slate, he was an instrumental part in the Wolverines' rushing offense that went from 106 yards per game prior to his move to 175 yards during his eight games at center.
Freshman tailback Mike Hart (Syracuse, N.Y./Onondaga Central HS) rounded out the Wolverines individual award winners with his selection as the Big Ten Freshman of the Year from the coaches and media. Hart earned all-conference first team honors from both panels after leading the conference in rushing this season.
In addition to Edwards and Hart, senior tight end Tim Massaquoi (Allentown, Pa./Parkland HS) earned All-Big Ten first team recognition from the coaches and media, as did senior cornerback Marlin Jackson (Sharon, Pa./Sharon HS) and senior strong safety Ernest Shazor (Detroit, Mich./Martin Luther King HS).
Baas led a quartet of Wolverines who gained All-Big Ten first team honors from the coaches and then picked up second-team nods from the media. The other three Wolverines to receive split recognition are senior right guard Matt Lentz (Ortonville, Mich./Brandon HS), senior left tackle Adam Stenavich (Marshfield, Wis./Marshfield HS) and junior nose tackle Gabe Watson (Novi, Mich./Southfield HS).
Sophomore right tackle Jake Long (Lapeer, Mich./Lapeer East HS) and sophomore outside linebacker LaMarr Woodley (Saginaw, Mich./Saginaw HS) were named All-Big Ten second team by the coaches and collected honorable mention from the media. Junior wide receiver Jason Avant (Chicago, Ill./Carver HS) received a second-team all-conference nod from the coaches.
Sophomore cornerback Leon Hall (Vista, Calif./Vista HS), freshman quarterback Chad Henne (Wyomissing, Pa./Wilson HS), senior inside linebacker Lawrence Reid (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington HS) and sophomore kicker Garrett Rivas (Tampa, Fla./Jesuit HS) earned honorable mention honors from both the coaches and media panels, while senior defensive end Pat Massey (Brecksville, Ohio/St. Ignatius HS) was an honorable mention selection by the media.
Fifth-year senior fullback Kevin Dudley (Brookville, Ind./Franklin County HS) was named the recipient of the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award for the Wolverines.
All-Big Ten Notes
U-M's nine first-team performers almost doubled the five All-Big Ten selections gained by the second place trio of Wisconsin, Iowa and Minnesota.
Eight of the Wolverines' 11 offensive starters earned All-Big Ten first or second team honors on the coaches ballot.
Four of Michigan's five offensive linemen gained All-Big Ten accolades.
Braylon Edwards became the 10th Wolverine to receive Player of the Year honors from the Big Ten. He joins Chris Perry (2003), Tyrone Wheatley (1992), Desmond Howard (1991), Jon Vaughn (1990), Jim Harbaugh (1986) and Anthony Carter (1982) as Big Ten Offensive Players of the Year.
Braylon Edwards joins Carter and Howard as the only Wolverines' wide receivers to earn the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year award.
Edwards (2003-04) and Marlin Jackson (2002, 2004) became two-time all-conference first team honorees with their selection this year. They are the 94th and 95th players in school history to receive All-Big Ten first team honors at least twice during their careers.
This is the second time in Michigan history that players had back-to-back offensive player of the year winners. The Wolverines won three straight conference offensive players of the year from 1990-92: Jon Vaughn (1990), Desmond Howard (1991) and Tyrone Wheatley (1992).
Hart became the fourth Wolverine to be named the Big Ten Freshman of the Year and the second player in as many years. He joined Steve Breaston, the 2003 winner from the coaches, as well as Anthony Thomas (1997) and Charles Woodson (1995) as Michigan recipients of the rookie award.
Baas is the fourth Wolverine to receive the Big Ten Offensive Lineman of the Year award, joining Greg Skrepenak (1991), Jon Jansen (1998) and Steve Hutchinson (2000).
Hall, Lentz, Long, Massaquoi, Stenavich, Watson and Woodley earned their first career All-Big Ten recognition.
