This Week's Lineup -- at Big Ten Tournament
No. 8-ranked Michigan (14-5, 5-1 Big Ten) will kick off the postseason at 11 a.m. on Saturday (Nov. 6) in the semifinals of the Big Ten Tournament in Evanston, Ill. The top-seeded Wolverines will face the winner of the Penn State/Ohio State first-round match while the second semifinal game will pit the winners of Iowa/Northwestern and Michigan State/Indiana. All games will be held at Northwestern's Leonard B. Thomas Sports Complex.
Tournament Notes
We Are the Champions -- Michigan enters the Big Ten Tournament after capturing its third consecutive Big Ten regular-season title and fifth in school history. The Wolverines are sharing the crown with Michigan State and Iowa, as each school finished the regular season with a 5-1 record.
Waiting To Play -- The Wolverines are the lone team in the tournament field with a bye in the first round, earned by receiving the top seed. The other six teams will play in the first round on Friday (Nov. 5), with the semifinals scheduled for Saturday (Nov. 6). Michigan will square off against the winner of the Penn State/Ohio State game, which pits the No. 4 seed (PSU) against the No. 5 seed (Ohio State). The championship match is slated for 1 p.m. on Sunday (Nov. 7).
Looking for Another Trophy -- Michigan is in search of its third Big Ten Tournament championship in school history, and first since 2000 when the Wolverines ran the table in the regular season and won their second straight tournament crown. U-M has advanced to the Big Ten Tournament championship game in five of the last six seasons.
Awards Week -- The Big Ten will announce its award winners for the 2004 season on Thursday (Nov. 4) at its annual awards banquet. The Wolverines have won seven of the eight individual awards during the previous two seasons and have boasted at least three individuals on the All-Big Ten First Team in the each of the last four seasons, more than any other school.
Michigan vs. the Big Ten Tournament Field ...
Penn State: Michigan owns an all-time record of 8-19 against Penn State but has won six of the last eight meetings, including the 1-0 victory last week in the Wolverines' season finale. In the Big Ten Tournament, U-M is 2-4 against Penn State and suffered a 1-0 overtime loss in the semifinals of last season's tournament. Iowa: Michigan trails 9-34 in the all-time series with Iowa but has won eight of the last 10 meetings. The Hawkeyes snapped U-M's five-game winning streak with a 4-3 overtime decision this season in Iowa City. In the Big Ten Tournament, Michigan is 1-0 against Iowa, triumping in the 1999 championship game by a 1-0 margin. For more information on Iowa field hockey, please visit www.hawkeyesports.com.
Michigan State: Michigan leads the all-time series with Michigan State, 29-21-6 and has owns a three-game winning streak over the Spartans. Senior Adrienne Hortillosa (Chula Vista, Calif./Bonita Vista HS) tallied the overtime game-winner to lead the Wolverines to a 1-0 victory over MSU this season in Ann Arbor. U-M is 0-1 against the Spartans in the Big Ten Tournament, falling to MSU by a 3-0 count in the championship game last year. Ohio State: The Wolverines own a 26-20-1 record against Ohio State and have won 12 of the last 15 meetings. Earlier this season, U-M notched a 1-0 victory over the Buckeyes behind a first-half goal by senior Jessica Blake (Perth, Western Australia/St. Mary's Anglican). The Wolverines, who are 4-3 against Ohio State in the Big Ten Tournament, have face OSU more times than any other opponent and eliminated the Buckeyes from the semifinals of last year's event with a 3-2 victory. Northwestern: Michigan trails 15-28 in the all-time series with Northwestern but has won each of the last 13 meetings dating back to the 1997 campaign, including a 4-1 victory this season in Ann Arbor. U-M is 2-0 against Northwestern in the Big Ten Tournament and has not faced the Wildcats since the first round of the 2000 tournament. Indiana: While Michigan owns a narrow 5-4 all-time series advantage, the Wolverines have gone 5-0 against the Hoosiers since they re-instituted their program in 2000, outscoring IU by a 31-2 margin. The Wolverines, who posted a 4-1 win over IU on Sept. 24 in Bloomington, Ind., have never faced the Hoosiers in the Big Ten Tournament. Statistically Speaking ...
Michigan leads the Big Ten Conference in six major statistical categories -- goals (65), points (172), assists (42), assists per game (2.33), shots (336) and share the top spot in shutouts (8) with Penn State. Individually, senior Adrienne Hortillosa leads the conference in game-winning goals (6) and shares the lead in assists while ranking second in assists per game, fourth in points, fifth in points per game, sixth in both goals and seventh in goals per game. Senior Jessica Blake holds the second spot in points and points per game and the third position in both goals and goals per game. Junior/sophomore Kate Morris holds the fifth spot in both goals and goals per game. Lending a Helping Hand
Senior captain Adrienne Hortillosa has 11 assists this season, bringing her career total to 38 helpers during her four seasons at Michigan, giving her sole possession of the third spot on U-M's all-time assists list. Hortillosa needs 18 assists to reach the second position, currently held by Courtney Reid (1997-2000) with 56 career assists. Two-time NFHCA All-American Catherine Foreman (1998-2001) owns the U-M record for most career assists with 61.

Climbing the Charts
With the game-winning goal against California (Oct. 22), senior captain Adrienne Hortillosa improved her career-point total to 102 and gained sole possession of fifth on Michigan's all-time points list. She needs five points to reach the fourth spot, currently held by Julie Flachs (107, 1994-97). Senior Jessica Blake has nearly cracked the top 10 on the list, ranking 11th with 85 career points. She needs just two more points to reach the 10th spot, held by Marty Maugh (87, 1979-82).

Iron Women
Senior captain Katy Moyneur (Escondido, Calif./San Pasqual HS) has not missed a single game during her four seasons at Michigan, starting all 87 U-M contests during that time. Senior captain Adrienne Hortillosa has also seen action in the Wolverines' 87 games -- with 70 starts -- during her four years. Both seniors moved into the eighth spot on U-M's career games played list with their starts against Penn State (Oct. 30) and stand just two games shy of the seventh position, currently held by Courtney Reid (89, 1997-2000). On a similar track, junior Lori Hillman (Gibbsboro, N.J./Eastern Regional HS) has started in 64 consecutive games in her third season at Michigan.

Hillman Snags Final Big Ten Defensive Weekly Honor
Junior Lori Hillman claimed the season's final Big Ten Conference Denfensive Player of the Week award after leading the U-M defensive corps in the 1-0 shutout against Penn State. It is Hillman's first career conference weekly honor and the fourth for the Wolverines during the 2004 season. Hillman joins senior Katy Moyneur (Escondido, Calif./San Pasqual HS), who earned the defensive recognition last week, on the defensive side, while senior Jessica Blake (Perth, Western Australia/St. Mary's Anglican) nabbed back-to-back offensive weekly honors earlier in the season.
Dillon Named to Senior All-Star Game Roster
Fifth-year senior Kate Dillon (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Central HS) was selected to participate in the 2004 NFHCA North/South Senior All-Star Game, scheduled to take place on Saturday, Nov. 20, in Winston-Salem, N.C. During Dillon's four seasons in the U-M lineup, the Wolverines have registered an impressive 66-20 record and advanced to the NCAA Championships three times, including claiming the NCAA title in 2001. The Wolverine senior has appeared in 77 contests in the Michigan backfield and has posted one goal and four assists during her career. Dillon was one of 19 players -- including five from the Big Ten -- named to the North squad.
On a Tear
Junior/sophomore Katie Morris (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer HS) has registered a point in eight of the Wolverines' last 10 games (8-1-17) -- including eight goals during an eight-game span. After entering the season without a career point, Morris currently ranks second on the team in goals (15) and third in points with 29.
Free Hits
The Wolverines completed the home portion of their schedule with a 8-2 mark in Ann Arbor this season, outscoring its opponents 34-11 at Ocker Field.
Michigan posted a 8-2 mark on road and was 1-1 in neutral-site games.
U-M also wrapped up its regular-season non-conference schedule with a 9-4 record against teams outside of the Big Ten.
Sophomore Mary Fox tallied her first career game-winning goal to lead the Wolverines 1-0 over Penn State.
On the Horizon
The Wolverines will await selection to the 2004 NCAA Tournament, which is scheduled to begin on Saturday, Nov. 13, at four campus sites around the country. Should Michigan win the Big Ten Tournament, it will be awarded the conference's automatic bid, one of six automatic qualifiers determined by the NCAA. The NCAA Tournament field is 16 teams and will be unveiled at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 9.
