Maravic Falls in Quarters at Big Ten Singles Tournament

MADISON, Wis. -- Freshman Matko Maravic (Zagreb, Croatia/V. Gimnazija) of the University of Michigan men's tennis team suffered a quarterfinal defeat Sunday afternoon (Nov. 14) at the 2004 Big Ten Conference Singles Championship at Wisconsin's Nielsen Tennis Stadium. Maravic, who was the lone Wolverine to move past the first round in the 64-player main draw, finished the tournament with a 3-1 record.
After two victories on Saturday (Nov. 13), Maravic kept on rolling through the bracket with a 6-3, 6-2 win over No. 90-ranked Chris Klingemann of Ohio State in the round of 16 Sunday morning. Maravic's quest for the title ended in the quarterfinals, as Penn State's Mark Barry came away with a 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 victory.
Sophomore Steve Peretz (Brooklyn, N.Y./The Dwight School) is the only U-M player left in the tournament, having advanced to the semifinals in the 32-player consolation round. Peretz defeated Wisconsin's Mark Weinig (6-3, 6-1) and Lachezar Kasarov (6-3, 6-4) to reach the final four. He will meet Indiana's John Stone tomorrow morning (Monday, Nov. 15) at 9 a.m. CST.
