COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team had its season come to an end with a 3-2 loss to Detroit in the first round of the NCAA Tournament Friday afternoon (Nov. 12) at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. The Wolverines nearly erased a three-goal halftime deficit by scoring two goals and outperforming the Titans 13-1 on the shot chart in the final 45 minutes. Detroit, which earned its first NCAA postseason victory, improves to 14-7-1, while Michigan finishes the year at 11-9-2.
The Titans earned the first scoring opportunity less than five minutes into the contest, as Judith Atwood got in front of everyone and chipped a shot past a charging Megan Tuura (Tucker, Ga./St. Pius X Catholic HS) just wide of the left post. Nine minutes later, sophomore Brenna Mulholland (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer HS) made a tackle on Atwood near the left endline and the referee awarded Detroit a penalty kick. Allison Epple stepped up and drilled the ball into the left side of the goal to give the Titans a 1-0 advantage at 13:34.
With just under 30 minutes left in the first half, sophomore Katelin Spencer (Brighton, Mich./Brighton HS) fired a shot that was blocked by a UDM defender. Freshman Jamie Artsis (Chatsworth, Calif./Harvard-Westlake School) put the rebound on target, but Titan goalkeeper Alisson Dube scooped up the attempt to keep Michigan scoreless.
The Wolverines were presented with a penalty kick of their own with 27 minutes remaining until the break, as Artsis was taken down near U-M's left endline. Michigan came up empty on its opportunity, as Dube made a diving stop on a shot by senior Laura Tanchon (Laguna Niguel, Calif./Dana Hills HS).
Detroit increased its lead at 22:52, as Kathy Banjavcic chased down an open ball before Tuura could get to it and chipped it into the left corner of the open net to put the Titans on top 2-0.
Michigan's last scoring chance in the first half came with just over three minutes left, as a Melissa Dobbyn (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson HS) shot from inside the box was blocked by a Titan defender. Detroit took a three-goal lead into the locker room after Banjavcic scored her second goal of the game off a rebound with just 1:18 remaining in the first half.
The Wolverines earned their first goal with 28:41 left in the game, as sophomore Judy Coffman's (San Jose, Calif./Santa Theresa HS) corner kick went untouched past Dube and into the net to cut the Detroit lead to 3-1. U-M continued to apply pressure down on UDM's end of the field, with Dube making a pair of saves on shots by Heaton and freshman Carrie Lacroix (Bexley, Ohio/Bexley HS) just minutes after Coffman's score.
U-M nearly trimmed the deficit to one goal with 22 minutes to go, but Dobbyn's attempt off a nice pass from senior Kate Morgan (San Jose, Calif./Archbishop Mitty HS) was stopped at the left post by Dube.
Michigan was able to stay in contention thanks to Dobbyn, who took a pass from senior Liz Dosa (Piemont, Calif./Piemont HS) and ripped a shot from outside the box past Dube to cut the Detroit lead to 3-2 with 5:53 left on the game clock.
Despite dominating in the final minutes, Michigan unable to break through and net the equalizer and the Titans came away with a victory in their first NCAA Tournament appearance.

QUOTES
Michigan Head Coach Debbie Rademacher
On the loss ... "Obviously we're extremely disappointed. To be down three goals in the first half and have to try to dig out of that hole was tough. We gave it everything we had and chipped away at it, but it was just a little bit too late."
On what was said at halftime ... "We went into halftime with the wind at our advantage. We figured that if we could just keep it down on Detroit's end and get some corner kicks, then we could be successful. I wish we could have had a few more corner kicks because we've been successful with those. We've came back from those deficits before, so we felt like we certainly had a chance to do it again."
