WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The No. 15 University of Michigan women's soccer team slipped by Purdue 1-0 Friday afternoon (Oct. 8) at the Varsity Soccer Complex. Senior Laura Tanchon (Laguna Niguel, Calif./Dana Hills HS) scored the lone goal of the game off a penalty kick in the 24th minute, and sophomore goalkeeper Megan Tuura (Tucker, Ga./St. Pius X Catholic HS) made five stops for her fifth shutout in the last eight games. With the victory, the Wolverines improve to 8-3-2 overall and are still in the hunt for their first-ever Big Ten Conference regular-season championship at 5-1-1.
In a match that was played pretty evenly, Michigan was fortunate enough to earn the early leg up with a score midway through the first half. Sophomore Judy Coffman (San Jose, Calif./Santa Theresa HS) was tripped up inside the box while going toward the goal, resulting in a penalty shot call by the referee. Tanchon stepped up and fired the ball past Boilermaker goalkeeper Lauren Mason to put U-M on the scoreboard.
Purdue was unable to break through Michigan's defense for a majority of the remaining minutes of the game. However, the Boilermakers did pick up their play with under 10 minutes left and were awarded a couple of crucial corner kicks late in the contest. One on attempt, Tuura made a huge kick save on a Purdue shot, but U-M was unable to clear the ball out. The Wolverines survived a scare after Arin Yarc headed the ensuing cross off the crossbar. Michigan was able to control possession in the final minutes and time ran out on a Boilermaker comeback.
The Wolverines finish the weekend against Indiana on Sunday (Oct. 10). The match against the Hoosiers is scheduled for noon EST/CDT at Armstrong Stadium in Bloomington, Ind.

Q U O T E S
U-M Head Coach Debbie Rademacher
On the penalty shot call ... "Judy (Coffman) got taken down in the box and the referee was calling everything really tight. She just got tripped from behind in the box and Laura (Tanchon) took the penalty kick."
On Michigan's performance ... "We didn't have a lot of opportunities. I don't think we played great. Purdue is really a hard team to play against and we always seem to have a tight game against them. I think it's really hard to play them on their field and we're just happy to come away with a win."
On the importance of starting the road stretch with a win ... "It's really important for us and for any kind of postseason consideration. We've just got to keep plugging away, stay tough and play good defense."
