Last Week
The Wolverines dropped out of the top spot in the Big Ten standings with a loss to Penn State and a tie to Ohio State at the U-M Soccer Field last weekend. On Friday (Oct. 1), Michigan suffered it's first loss in nine games after PSU's Tiffany Weimer scored a goal in the 106th minute to give the Nittany Lions a 1-0 victory in double overtime. On Sunday (Oct. 3), the Wolverines used a goal by freshman Kandice McLaughlin (West Hills, Calif./El Camino Real HS) to take the lead against the Buckeyes heading into halftime, but OSU's Lara Dickenmann netted the equalizer in the 63rd minute and the game eventually ended in a 1-1 draw after two overtimes.
McLaughlin Has Big Goals
Both of Kandice McLaughlin's two career goals have been key for Michigan. After scoring her first ever goal as a Wolverine in the 101st minute at Minnesota (Sept. 24) to give U-M a 1-0 double overtime victory, McLaughlin scored in the 35th minute to help Michigan to a 1-1 double overtime tie against Ohio State last Sunday (Oct. 3). In 12 career games, McLaughlin has totaled two goals and one assist for five points.
Tuura Saves the Day
Sophomore goalkeeper Megan Tuura (Tucker, Ga./St. Pius X Catholic HS) came up big for the Wolverines this past weekend, allowing just two goals and making 20 saves in over 215 minutes of action. After keeping Michigan in contention with a career-high nine saves against Penn State, Tuura bettered that performance with an 11-save effort against Ohio State. In 32 career games, Tuura has allowed just 26 goals in over 2,736 minutes for a remarkable 0.86 GAA.
Heaton Ready to Assist
Junior Therese Heaton (Wheaton, Ill./Warrenville South HS) is now tied for the team lead in assists after tallying her third helper of the season on Kandice McLaughlin's goal against Ohio State. In 61 career games, Heaton has posted 19 goals and 10 assists for 48 points.
Artsis Selected to Soccer America's Team of the Week
Freshman Jamie Artsis (Chatsworth, Calif./Harvard-Westlake School), who was selected as the Big Ten Conference Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 27, earned national recognition with a nomination to Soccer America's Team of the Week last Tuesday (Sept. 28). Considered the country's No. 1 soccer magzine, Soccer America honored Artsis following her seven-point outburst in the Wolverines' two Big Ten road victories over Minnesota (Sept. 24) and Iowa (Sept. 26).
