This Week's Lineup -- at Pacific/Iowa
The No. 9-ranked Wolverines (9-3, 2-0 Big Ten) travel to Iowa City, Iowa, for their final two-game road series of the seasons, squaring off against Pacific and Iowa at the Hawkeyes' Grant Field. On Saturday (Oct. 9), Michigan will face the Tigers at 1:30 p.m. CDT before playing Big Ten Conference foe at 11 a.m. on Sunday (Oct. 10).
Scouting the Tigers
Michigan owns a perfect 3-0 mark in the all-time series with Pacific, dating back to the 1989 campaign. In the last meeting between the two programs -- on Sept. 1, 1998 -- four different Wolverines scored as senior goalkeeper Amy Helber notched her second shutout of the season in a 4-0 U-M victory. Scouting the Hawkeyes
Michigan trails 9-33 in the all-time series with Iowa but has won eight of the last 10 meetings, including five straight. In last season's match between the two schools, senior April Fronzoni tallied the game winner with just 13:17 to break a scoreless tie and propel U-M to a 1-0 victory in Ann Arbor. Statistically Speaking ...
National statistics, compiled by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA), are released every Tuesday during the season. Senior Jessica Blake ranks third in the nation in both goals (17) and points (39) while holding the fourth spot in both points per game (3.250) and goals per game (1.417). Senior Adrienne Hortillosa also ranks among the national leaders in points with the 13th (27) in points and 16th in points per game (2.250).
Michigan leads the Big Ten Conference in six major statistical categories -- goals (51), goals per game (4.25), points (135), assists (33), assists per game (2.75) and shots (244). Individually, senior Adrienne Hortillosa shares the lead in assists and assists per game while senior Jessica Blake ranks second in goals, goals per game, points and points per game and leads in game-winning goals (4). Lending a Helping Hand
With seven assists this season, senior captain Adrienne Hortillosa has brought her career total to 34 helpers during her four seasons at Michigan to gain sole possession of the third spot on U-M's all-time assists list. Hortillosa needs 22 assists to reach the second position, currently held by Courtney Reid (1997-2000) with 56 career assists. Two-time NFHCA All-American Catherine Foreman (1998-2001) owns the U-M record for most career assists with 61.
Climbing the Charts
With two goals against Harvard (Oct. 3), senior captain Adrienne Hortillosa brought her career total points to 92 through her four seasons at Michigan, moving her into the seventh spot on Michigan's all-time points list, where she is tied with Kay McCarthy (1980-83). Hortillosa needs four more points to reach the sixth position, currently held by Courtney Reid (96, 1997-2000). With her three goals against Northwestern (Oct. 2), senior Jessica Blake also cracked the top 10 on the list, ranking 10th with 81 career points. She needs six more points to reach the ninth spot, held by Marty Maugh (87, 1979-82).
Iron Women
Senior captain Katy Moyneur (Escondido, Calif./San Pasqual HS) has not missed a single game during her four seasons at Michigan, starting all 80 U-M contests during that time. Senior captain Adrienne Hortillosa has also seen action in the Wolverines' 80 games -- with 63 starts -- during her four years while junior Lori Hillman (Gibbsboro, N.J./Eastern Regional HS) has started in 57 consecutive games in her third season at Michigan.
Free Hits
The Wolverines are 24-2-1 all-time meetings against NorPac teams (7-1 vs. Southwest Missouri State, 6-1 vs. St. Louis, 4-0 vs. Stanford, 3-0 vs. California, 3-0 vs. Pacific, 1-0 vs. Radford).
Head coach Marcia Pankratz returns to her alma mater, the University of Iowa, in Iowa City this weekend. Pankratz is a 1987 graduate of Iowa, where she ranks third among the all-time goal scorers with 76 markers.
Without a point against Harvard, senior Jessica Blake saw her season-scoring streak halted at 11 games.
Junior Lori Hillman and sophomore Mary Fox each have three-game scoring streaks.
Earning an assist on each of Hortillosa's goals, sophomore Kara Lentz tallied her first and second career points at Michigan.
The Wolverines have outshot their opponents in each of the last 10 games.
On the Horizon
The Wolverines kick off a four-game homestand next Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 16-17, against Michigan State and Maryland. Both games are slated for a 1 p.m. start at Phyllis Ocker Field.
