ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Battling cold and windy conditions, the No.10-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team suffered a 4-1 defeat to No. 4 Maryland on Sunday (Oct. 17) at Ocker Field. Despite outshooting and out-cornering the Terrapins in the second half, U-M could not overcome a two-goal halftime deficit.
Maryland opened scoring at the 7:32 mark of the contest as Janneke van Leeuwen tallied an unassisted marker, collecting the ball off a rebound low on the left side of the circle and banging it past U-M sophomore goalkeeper Beth Riley (Palmyra, Pa./Palmyra Area HS).
Junior/sophomore Katie Morris (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer HS) knotted the score at 1-1 off a U-M penalty corner at the 15:06 mark as the Wolverines forward got a piece of a shot from senior captain Adrienne Hortillosa (Chula Vista, Calif./Bonita Vista HS) to redirect the ball high into the Terrapin cage over goalkeeper Kathryn Mason. With an assist on the play, Hortillosa earned her 100th career point during her four-year Michigan career.
Penalty corners continued to play an important role in the game as the Terrapins quickly responded to Michigan's goal with back-to-back goals resulting from corner situations. Anja Boettcher put Maryland ahead for good at 17:24, tipping a shot from Lauren Powley from in front of the Wolverine net to the high right corner of the cage. Sara Silvetti rounded out first-half scoring with a goal at 27:26 to give Maryland a 3-1 advantage at the halftime intermission.
The Terrapins added an insurance second-half goal at the 49:11 mark as van Leeuwen tallied her second marker of the game, sending a rebound past Riley to the lower left corner.
Maryland held the narrow 13-10 advantage in shots -- although the Wolverines led the category 7-6 in the second half -- and out-cornered Michigan 7-6. Sophomore Riley made a pair of saves in the Wolverine cage, while Masson earned six stops for the Maryland victory.
The Maize and Blue will play its final two regular-season home contests next weekand against California and Ohio State at Phyllis Ocker Field. U-M will sqaure off against the Golden Bears at 3 p.m. on Friday (Oct. 22) before returning for its home finale on Saturday (Oct. 23) against Big Ten foe Ohio State at 2 p.m.
