Chipping and Putting with Isabelle Gendreau
10/12/2004 12:00:00 AM | Women's Golf
As with any freshman coming onto campus there are always nerves and hesitations, but for University of Michigan women's golfer Isabelle Gendreau, she has made the most of her first month and half in Ann Arbor and is quietly making an impression in the Wolverine starting lineup.
In her first week on campus she helped the Wolverines win their first tournament of the season with a key even-par 72 final round at the Lady Northern Invitational. She then was part of back-to-back wins as the Maize and Blue took the crown at the Mary Fossum Invitational in East Lansing. She makes her third start with the Wolverines at the Lady Razorback Invitational.
Orginially hailing from St. Georges de Beauce, Quebec, French was her primary language, but after spending two years at Saint Andrew's School in Boca Raton, Fla., where she finished her high school career, she has picked up her English and has had no problem getting by in Ann Arbor.
Still, shy and reserved, Isabelle took a few minutes to talk about how she ended up at Michigan, what has she thought of her first month her and if there has been any difficulties with college life.
On how she likes Michigan thus far
"I love it. It's very fun and the golf team is very nice."
On winning the first two tournaments
"I think we have a very good team. We've started well and continue to play well. Everyone plays their best, whole by whole, and we end up playing well. I enjoyed the first experience playing here at home with all my family and the fans watching."
On the difficulty of being far from home
"No, because I was in Florida for two years while my family was in Quebec. So I'm kind of used to living in the dorms and everything. We talk everyday on the phone. If we don't talk everyday my family will get mad."
On the difficulty of understanding the language
"I only speak French and English. If I don't understand, then I just ask them to repeat themselves for me."
On her classes
"There is a lot of reading to do in the classes which is hard because I read very slow. It takes me double the time it would take another student to read."
On goals for the season
"I would like to shoot in the range of 74 and be a little more consistent on the course."
On her favorite thing about being in college
"I love the spirit here. I went to the football game and I really enjoyed the spirit there as well as at the golf games."
On choosing Michigan
"I liked everything here. I liked the coach and the girls. I also like that Michigan has a very good business school because I would like to pursue accounting."
On the closeness of the team
"Everyone gets along well. We have many different personalities and we complete each other."
