ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan field hockey team opened the road portion of its 2003 campaign in fine fashion, downing the host Northeastern Huskies 4-3 on Saturday (Sept. 6). Freshman Jill Civic (Wescosville, Pa./Emmaus HS) scored twice, including the game-winning marker, to lead U-M, while sophomore Lori Hillman (Gibbsboro, N.J./Eastern Regional HS) and senior April Fronzoni (Larksville, Pa./Wyoming Valley West HS) also added goals.
With the win, the Wolverines snap a four-game losing streak that dated back to last season. They also improved to a perfect 6-0 against Northeastern, including a 4-0 mark at NU's Sweeney Field.
Michigan scored the game's first three goals to take a 3-0 advantage, then held on as the NU's Mari Creatini single-handedly brought the Huskies back into the game, scoring all three of Northeastern's goals in a six-minute span during the second half.
Hillman gave the Wolverines a 1-0 lead with the only goal of the first half, scoring at 29:36, while Fronzoni and Civic added markers at 46:43 and 50:00 to put U-M up 3-0. Cooper began her scoring frenzy just 6:39 later, before adding another goal at 59:48 to pull the Huskies within one. With the score 3-2 in favor of U-M, Civic struck again, netting her third goal of the season just 16 seconds later to put the Wolverines up 4-2. Creatini completed her hat trick at 62:02 to complete the scoring.
Michigan outshot the Huskies 12-11, with junior Molly Maloney (Lake Bluff, Ill./Lake Forest HS) stopping three shots in the first half and freshman Beth Riley (Palmyra, Pa./Palmyra Area) stopping one shot in the second half during her collegiate debut. Each team recorded eight penalty corner attempts, including six by the Wolverines in the second half.
U-M will conclude its Boston area road trip on Sunday (Sept. 7), traveling to Chestnut Hill, Mass., to face Boston College at 1 p.m.
