Last Week
The Wolverines earned their first two-game winning streak of the season by posting a pair of shutout victories over Wisconsin and Minnesota last weekend at the U-M Soccer Field. On Friday (Sept. 26), sophomore Katie Kramer (Andover, Mass./Andover HS) scored 57 seconds into the contest to help U-M defeat Wisconsin 2-0 for its first Big Ten win of 2003. The Wolverines knocked off Minnesota 1-0 on Sunday (Sept. 28) behind a first-half goal from junior Kate Morgan (San Jose, Calif./Archbishop Mitty HS).
No Soup for You
Michigan did not allow Minnesota to get a single shot on goal in its 1-0 win over the Gophers Sunday (Sept. 28). The Wolverine defense held Minnesota to just four shots the entire game, while U-M was able to post 19 shots in the victory. The last time Michigan held an opponent without a shot on goal was back on Sept. 17, 2001, when the Wolverines shut out Detroit 4-0 at the U-M Soccer Field. Michigan is listed second in goals allowed per conference game (0.25) and is tied for first in Big Ten shutouts (three).
Kramer Tallies Third Fast Goal in U-M History
With her game-winning goal 57 seconds into the game on Friday (Sept. 26), Katie Kramer scored the third fastest goal to start a game in the 10-year history of the program. Sophomore Therese Heaton (Wheaton, Ill./Warrenville South HS) set the record last season, scoring her first career goal 36 seconds into the season opener against Florida on Aug. 30, 2002. Ruth Poulin (1994-97) netted a goal 42 seconds into a game against Valparaiso on Sept. 25, 1994, to place second on the list. Kramer's goal was the first of her career and her first points at U-M.
Morgan Leads the Offense
Kate Morgan had two goals last weekend, scoring an insurance goal in the final minutes of the 1-0 win over Wisconsin (Sept. 26) and netting the game-winner in a 1-0 victory over Minnesota (Sept. 28). Morgan's goal against the Gophers was the third game-winning tally of her career. Through 10 games this season, Morgan leads U-M in goals (four), points (eight) and game-winning goals (two). Coming into this season, Morgan only had five goals in her first two years wearing the Maize and Blue. In 66 career games, Morgan has totaled nine goals and three assists for 21 points. She is currently tied for sixth place in the Big Ten in total points in conference play (four).
Vince Continues Trend
Junior transfer Robyn Vince (Holt, Mich./Holt HS), who left Tennessee Tech as the career leader in assists (26), looks to achieve similar success at Michigan. Vince has started all 10 games for the Wolverines this season and has collected a team-best three assists on the year. In 48 collegiate games, Vince has totals of 29 assists and 17 goals for 63 points.
Chavez Nears Half-Century Mark in Points
With an assist on Katie Kramer's goal against Minnesota (Sept. 26), senior Stephanie Chavez (Shorewood, Wis./Shorewood HS) needs two points to reach 50 for her career. Chavez is in 10th place on Michigan's all-time points list with 48. She needs four points to tie Marie Spaccarotella (1996-2000) for ninth place. In 70 career games, Chavez has totaled 18 goals and 12 assists. She lists third in points this season with four (one goal, two assists).
Tuura Selected Big Ten Co-Defensive Player of the Week
Freshman goalkeeper Megan Tuura (Tucker, Ga./St. Pius X Catholic HS) was named Big Ten co-Defensive Player of the Week on Monday (Sept. 29) following her shutout performance in a 2-0 home victory over Wisconsin last Friday (Sept. 26). It marks Tuura's first career conference Player of the Week selection. Tuura secured her second career shutout with the win against the Badgers, stopping all four shots she faced in 90 minutes in net. Tuura has been stellar in between the posts for the Wolverines all season, allowing just four goals in 690 minutes of action (0.52 GAA). Tuura holds a 2-2-2 record in eight games this season and has collected a team-best 23 saves. This marks Michigan's first weekly conference honor since Oct. 6, 2002, when senior goalkeeper Suzie Grech (Narberth, Pa./The Shipley School) and Andrea Kayal (1999-2002) were named co-Defensive Players of the Week.
Grech Earns 25th Career Shutout
Though she did not see a shot on goal, Suzie Grech reached her 25th career shutout at Michigan with the 1-0 win over Minnesota (Sept. 28). The win and shutout are her first in 2003. In 56 games as a Wolverine, Grech has compiled a career record of 34-16-2, allowing 52 goals for a 1.01 GAA.
Rademacher Nears 50th Big Ten Win
Head coach Debbie Rademacher needs two conference victories to reach 50 for her career. In 10 seasons at the helm of the women's soccer program, Rademacher has posted a career record of 121-70-16, including a Big Ten mark of 47-28-8. She has led her team to six consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, including a trip to the quarterfinal round in 2002. Rademacher needs four wins to reach her 125th career victory at U-M. In 2001, she reached her fourth major coaching milestone with her 100th win on Nov. 3 against Western Michigan.
