COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The University of Michigan field hockey team, playing a day later than scheduled due to Hurricane Isabel, saw its four-game winning streak halted by third-ranked Maryland, as the Terrapins handed the Wolverines a 4-2 defeat Saturday (Sept. 20) in a rematch of the 2001 NCAA championship game. Senior Stephanie Johnson (Houston, Texas/The Kinkaid School) and junior Jessica Blake (Perth, Western Austrailia/St. Mary's Anglican School) scored for the sixth-ranked Wolverines, who were outshot 18-13.
The Terrapins took a 2-0 lead 11:54 into the game when Jackie Ciconte and Colleen Barbieri scored 1:19 apart. The Wolverines responded with the first of two goals during a penalty corner, as Johnson found the back of the cage 4:58 into the second half.
Maryland struck again with two goals less than five minutes apart to take a 4-1 lead with less than two minutes left in regulation before Blake converted a penalty corner at 68:55 to round out the scoring.
Junior Molly Maloney (Lake Bluff, Ill./Lake Forest HS) posted eight saves in the losing effort, while Maryland's Tori Cano made four stops.
The Wolverines will wrap up their road trip to Maryland on Sunday (Sept. 21), facing James Madison at noon at the Field Hockey and Lacrosee Complex on the campus of Maryland.
